I worked at Dark Horse Comics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good health benefits right away and PTO plan after one year. Fun events and perks. Great people to work with.

    Cons

Doesn't offer much PTO in first year and doesn't match or profit share 401(k). A bit of a disconnect between VP's and employees. Lower wages. There isn't as much growth opportunity but that is mainly due to size of company.

I have been working at Dark Horse Comics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fun staff, cool projects and autonomy to self manage

    Cons

Silos as there are multiple buildings staff work in so hard to get to know some outside of your immediate department or building

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff, trust them to do the jobs hired and always respect them and their experience. If you provide clear direction, most will want to support and follow it.

    Pros

The staff aside from a few managers are extremely talented. Heath care benefits are decent. Vacation time is acceptable but not excellent.

    Cons

Promotions are usually given to managers only. The pay is the worst in publishing. If you think you eventually will be compensated if you work there long enough- that will not be the case. Some managers think they are royalty and treat others very poorly. The recent social media stories are true. Some people get special privileges due to their rank. Terrible place to work.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the people who are actually doing the work and pay them s decent wage. Obviously something is wrong when the company has been reviewed poorly for so many years.

I worked at Dark Horse Comics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nearly everyone i worked with was very laid back and i made some good friends during my time there. There were a lot of learning opportunities for junior and intern level engineers.

As an engineer, putting in more than 40 hours in a week was an extreme rarity.

    Cons

I don't think i was alone in feeling a little out of place being a software guy working at a publishing company. I got the feeling that people higher up in management didn't really know what to do with our group.

The tech stack was frustratingly old and cumbersome.

While I was there I saw most of the senior or mid-level engineers leave, which meant that it was hard for the juniors/interns to get mentored.

    Advice to Management

Figure out exactly what you want to get out of your software group, stop doing everything in-house, rotate management.

I have been working at Dark Horse Comics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There is staff on board that are dedicated, fun and have great ideas that truly contribute to the work. The environment is totally casual and you can decorate your space pretty much how ever you want. Donuts and bagel days have been happening more and they seem to be trying harder at listening to staff suggestions. . 3 different buildings with office staff and the vibe can be different in each one. Trust is there to self manage (in most departments) in a very timeline driven environment. Great health insurance and free gym membership. Cool comps and idea is "cool" to work in comic industry and can nerd out over some of the creations.

    Cons

Other benefits are standard but improvements could be made. 5 days paid time off after 90 days and then 3 weeks after one year. Accrual each pay would be better. More fun things though could be done to bring different departments together. Being spaced out in a few different buildings even if across the street doesn't always help promote "team environment" and it keeps it a bit silo'd in some departments. Training within the department could be more consistent but there are lots of staff who have been there for a long time that you can fill in the knowledge gaps with

    Advice to Management

Engage your staff more, offer additional perks that match the idea of what the company wants to be. Allow for more community events.

I have been working at Dark Horse Comics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - High mobility rate, very easy to be recognized for performance
    - Great work life balance; few people work more than 40 or so hours
    - Cool coworkers, liberal and relaxed environment. Definitely no need to put on a 'work face'. Extremely casual dress code.
    - You don't have to explain what you do to people, they know what it is.
    - Opportunities for actual fun business travel
    - Flexible time and schedules
    - Very little micromanagement (in most departments)
    - Good basic benefits: sick, personal and vacation, really good health insurance.

    Cons

    - Pay is on the low end of standard for publishing. Not a HUGE con, you know it's publishing going in, but you won't get rich working here. Pay increases seem to vary wildly across different departments. If you have a good boss who really goes to bat with upper mgmt on your behalf, you can do ok.
    - Not a lot of tangible perks outside of the standard benefits offered. Gym membership is about the only 'additional' benefit offered. The cool factor and the company culture are a big intangible benefit, but if you don't care about those things, you might feel a little cheaped out upon.

    Pros

Relaxed environment, great employees, casual, you can basically slack off all day and not get fired.

    Cons

Management is the worst I've seen. Narcissism runs rampant through out management and there are no consequences for their behavior. Morale is so low that employees ask to get fired or laid off. HR and management is shady and not to be trusted- they do everything they can to divert responsibility for their mistakes and place it on to their employees. Being " thrown under the bus" is a chronic problem for regular employees. Management is broken from the top down, and like a poster said previously, the company is the owner's toy.

    Advice to Management

Get some therapy, take responsibility for your actions, increase morale, increase pay (at least double what everyone is making-it would still be low, but seriously. ..) try treating employees with respect-you might actually increase productivity and save the company some money (which should go straight to the employees' pockets)

    Pros

The company offers a flexible schedule (for most positions), great medical, a dedicated staff, cool products, gym membership and relaxed environment.

    Cons

Not all of the perks are as good as they could be. Office politics that are unnecessary, cause a disconnect between departments (but from my experience with other companies this size, nothing out of the norm). Salary could be more competitive.

    Advice to Management

More communication to staff about future plans, how the company is doing etc etc. Engage the staff for feedback on how to make the company greater and they will invest even more to help make it happen. Need to be more competitive with salaries and other perks.

    Pros

Family-like environment, good medical benefits and free gym membership, free comics, fun and passionate co-workers, very casual dress code.

    Cons

Upper management is mostly cronies, which weighs down the cash flow and creative flow, pay is not competitive at all, business is basically the owners toy, so often poor decisions are based on nostalgia.

    Advice to Management

You need to gut a lot of the management and get rid of yes people, add a few more creative business people, and stop talking about how things were back in the day. That was then, this is now.
