    Pros

This is a family owned business, which can be a benefit. Generally speaking, projects that have visibility of the owners can be fast-tracked and avoid the usual bureaucracy of a public company. Most of the engineering staff are pleasant people, although not the 'cream of the crop' given the low compensation.

    Cons

The morale is very poor among most of the engineering staff. Creativity is usually stifled by the oppressive management style. The structure of the engineering department is quite top-heavy. If you are concerned about salary, don't bother with Dart. The M.O. seems to be focused on filling positions with people who are not qualified to go elsewhere, and thus cannot demand competitive salaries. There are individuals who are exceptions to this rule at Dart (talented and not concerned with compensation), and Dart is lucky to have had them on staff for 20-30 years. For most others with any real expertise, tenure seems to be about 2-5 years at best.

    Advice to Management

Morale is very important in an engineering driven company. If an engineer is not rewarded for his accomplishments, he will learn to choose the easiest solution instead of the best solution. You have forgotten the legacy of this company, and the inventive entrepreneurial spirit is slipping away. Better do something to catch it, or your competitive advantage will slip away with it.

I worked at Dart Container full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefit package looked decent, but never got a chance to receive any benefits.

    Cons

They watch every move you make and what time you did it.
I was told that dress code is business casual, ie: khakis, polo shirts, dress shoes, but other people got to wear jeans and/or t-shirts like Nike and Under Armour EVERY day.
Can't say the word "cute" about anyone or anything as it's constured as sexual harrasment. Can't comment on a baby picture, someone's hairstyle or shirt, etc. And if you even refer to someone working there or NOT even working there as 'cute', you're fired.

    Advice to Management

    LIGHTEN UP and BACK OFF!
Enforce your company policy either to EVERYONE or NO ONE!

I worked at Dart Container full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay. nice parking lot, clean bathrooms, air conditioned break rooms, great vending machines, thirst quencher is provided for free on hot days.

    Cons

17 years of my life down the toilet. Definitely a good ol' boy network running things in Leola PA, If you get a job here, you had better get your self some rental property and a side business because you will need it. Don't expect to retire from here unless you are an excellent brown nose er.

    Safety is a joke.

    Advice to Management

Stop ignoring this problem, I'm not saying anything that most folks don't already know about the Leola plant.

I worked at Dart Container full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good product lines. Brand recognition. Sizable company. Some potential for movement within the company (but getting less as Solo people fill them). Good health benefits when most companies are tightening budgets. Decent retirement plan.

    Cons

Since the Solo acquisition, it's become hostile and doesn't follow the core culture. People from the acquisition are unnecessarily desperate to save their jobs and manipulate the trusting nature of existing management with ideas or concepts that are not in the best long term interest of the company. Many of these legacy people have an attitude that Dart has money to waste so they push wasteful spending.

    Advice to Management

You got a decent fire sale of your competitor. Don't dilute your management structure with the people, they are the same culture that pushed their company to bleed the books red.

    "Terrible Company to work for!"

    Pros

Not to many good things to say about the company at all....however there are some good people who work there.

    Cons

Typical "Big Business" corp. all they care about is lining their pockets! Horrible supervisors and management teams...just don't care about employees at all!

    Advice to Management

Quit being so greedy and stop and think about your employees and their families! Don't force employees to do certain job duties that were not on their job description when they hired in! Stop being cowards and help employees with job issues!!

I have been working at Dart Container full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are pretty good. Lots of opportunity for industry learning, if you seek it out. Steady work with no fear of downsizing.

    Cons

When I started at this company more than 10 years ago, it was an International business that functioned like a small business. What I mean is that Employees were treated as valuable commodities and it was not unheard of for people to stay with the company for 35+ years. Recently, the company has taken on a 'Corporate' mindset and Employees are now treated as cogs in their money-making wheel.

    Advice to Management

Know what your Employees' jobs are and how the work is done before you change the procedures. And give the same level of Respect that you yourself expect to the Employees that you supervise.

    Pros

Benefits are easily comparable to that of McDonalds. The pay is better than minimum wage, if you've been there over 8 years. The hours outside of the shop floors, are 8-5.

    Cons

Dart is notorious for paying pennies for degreed work, from people who aren't rewarded with title or paid as such. The company refuses to replace the last 6 employees that left (because they found an employer willing to pay them what they're worth), but the employee (doing the work of 3 men) is reprimanded for not completing work of people who are 2 payscales/experience levels above them. This place is a joke. Between the occasional cut-throat layoffs, pay that barely covers the cost of living each year, PTO that is used against them in reviews if they choose to use it, unconditional black and white rules and policies for the minions, but salaried employees come and go as they please. Taking long lunches, arriving late and leaving early every day. While the hourly staff is docked days of pay for being late on a snow day that produces 10+ inches of snow. The employees’ concerns are never addressed or taken seriously. I have never seen such total disregard for uniformed rules and regulations, employee satisfaction and appraisals that lead to promotions, in all of my life. I am gainfully employed and have a college education and would never apply to this facility or recommend that anyone apply to this facility. STAY AWAY if you want to build a future career. It will be nothing but a life among the corporate zombies, hungry for money, eating souls for nourishment. SHAME ON YOU DART! CLEAN UP YOUR ACT! The only reason this employer is successful, is because they spend their money on acquisitions of the competition, not their employees.

    Advice to Management

Implement uniformed policies that apply to hourly staff, management AND corporate. Setting an example is precedence for what you expect from your staff. Develop an employee satisfaction initiative. I guarantee if you take a survey, you'd find that well over 90% of your current employees are actively seeking employment elsewhere. Offer competitive pay, benefits that aren’t used against them in reviews and opportunities to move up. Treat your employees like humans with families, that vacation, cars that break down and sick children that need to be cared for, educational opportunities that will encourage your employees to flourish, not sit stagnant stacking cups and boxes. Hire someone to head that initiative, with the hundreds of thousands of dollars that you're not paying your hard working employees.

"Unfortunate Experience, Did not live up to Professionalism or Guidelines"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at Dart Container full-time

    Pros

Not all departments, facilities, or personnel had issues: support, efforts to do the best and a positive job, intelligence/experience, and ethics do exist. Not always easy to find.
Some introduction and programs were introduced for updating issues, but no accountability when not applied or learned.

    Cons

In Engineering Department - Lack of Integrity and Honesty, and Bullying, and Abuse was enabled rather than corrected.
Old model, outdated management style exists that does not take into account or is respectful of employee value, the value of communications, or of working together. Greater emphasis on putting up obstacles and excuses than on successful outcomes.
Many examples where the listed procedures or guidelines or training were not followed.
    Missing long term planning.
Not sure if the Dart family is aware of the problems.
