I have been working at Datalink full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Datalink doesn't go cheap on anything; happy hours, client dinners, hotels and flights. Work culture is strong, the people are nice, you feel like a family.

    Cons

The future of the company is very unstable, projects are constantly undersold, putting strain on the project team when they get to the client site. The company needs some re-evaluation and a new direction and way of operating.

    Advice to Management

Need a better sales team. Sales and services are disconnected from one another, and management is disconnected from everything

I worked at Datalink full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good compensation & benefits. Was fair regarding work/life balance.

    Cons

Management is horrible as is their service sales methodology. PM's are brought into projects AFTER the pre-sales process and AFTER the SOW is written, and BEFORE any thought to professional resources are addressed. You are constantly fighting low budget and under-scoped projects and have to fight other projects for resources. The result is most commonly protracted or missed deadlines, failure to meet margins and quarterly revenue numbers, constant change orders, unhappy customers, and the blame being placed solely on you the PM.

    Advice to Management

Assign PMs to the service sales process at the beginning and manage your technical resources' time and availability much much better. Start enabling your PMs to do their jobs instead of ignorantly booby trapping their success, and the success of the project.

I worked at Datalink full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Solid place to work for senior IT network and infrastructure consultants. They just were acquired by Insight, so there is potential for growth with added resources.

    Cons

Just acquired by Insight. Who knows how this will play out long term? Datalink already felt like a large, yet unstable, company with a disconnect between employees and management. They keep their employees in the dark. The merger with Insight may help with this long term, but at this point it has only made it worse. Insight made the acquisition so job security within Datalink's departments is non existent.

    Advice to Management

Datalink department managers need to be more transparent with their department's employees. Perhaps the lack of transparency comes from the new leadership at Insight. Either way, the lack of transparency and therefor job security will inevitably lead to a lack of focus among current talent which will effect overall production of the organization, and will surely lead to increased turnover.

I have been working at Datalink full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Great compensation
    Work from home
A lot of exposure to relevant technologies, limitless opportunity to learn what you want
Great for an entrepreneurial focused individual
Highly skilled colleagues with a wealth of knowledge

    Cons

    Internal training is lacking
No clearly defined expectations on work being performed
Very limited SOP and processes - "reinventing the wheel" is common
Sometimes you are left in the dark and not sure where your time should be focused

    Advice to Management

Please provide more in-depth onboarding and training for new employees so they can understand exactly what is expected of them. An employee with clearly defined goals and expectations is a motivated employee.

    Pros

It used to be a great company with a great culture

    Cons

Managers care more about themselves than their employees

    Advice to Management

restructure or you will lose ALL of your talent. Ask around, They have trouble hiring good talent, In my opinion DL is getting a terrible reputation as a place to avoid working.
