I worked at Davidson Kempner Capital Management as an intern

    Pros

Great management team that ensures interns have meaningful work to do. Rather than doing basic tasks, interns actually have the opportunity to contribute to the team.

Multiple opportunities to learn about different firm functions (ops, accounting, legal, etc).

Many employees from front office willing to let interns shadow them to gain an understanding of how trading, investment analysis, portfolio management, etc. is done at DKCM.

    Compensation is very competitive.

    Cons

Internship could have been longer. Was only 7-8 weeks. Program would benefit from being 10-12 weeks.

    Advice to Management

Develop a front office undergraduate intern program that can teach promising undergrads the basics of buy-side investment analysis and trading. This will create a larger talent pool from which to hire new analysts.

I worked at Davidson Kempner Capital Management full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I can really only say great things about the company. Leadership and employees are smart, respectful, and caring. Really, all-around good people in their professional and personal lives. Ethical and responsible.

Professional culture. Management will listen and is happy to help. Hard work is acknowledged and rewarded.

Good benefits: pay, bonuses, tuition reimbursement plan

    Cons

Grew quite a bit, so not as much of that small company feel. Yet not quite like a large corporation that might be able to put more focus on employee development.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing. You are what sets this firm apart from others in the industry.

I worked at Davidson Kempner Capital Management full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There's a reason why this company has lasted so long. Most shops close up in a few years but this has lasted over 30 years because of numerous reason:

    1. Great Culture - Work hard and you will get rewarded
    2. Open door policy - Management is always willing to support your goals
    3. Many benefits benefits that are not heard of in other companies

And most importantly, the people. The turnover is low due to the tight network and culture all around.

    Cons

I would say N/A, but I guess the only con I can think of is that the hours are longer than your usual job.

    Advice to Management

Keep the hiring to only exceptional employees. They will learn to understand the rewards.
