I have been working at Davis Polk full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Amazing place to work with super smart attorneys. Well run and very well managed for Big Law. Excellent range of legal experience for young associates and great sophisticated clients.

    Cons

Typical Big Law challenges apply - unpredictable hours and some intense deals make lifestyle challenging, but this is true of any sophisticated law firm. In all, much better lifestyle than NY offices.

    Pros

Davis Polk has great people and interesting, high-quality work. The summer program is filled with great events and lets you get to know your class very well.

    Cons

The culture is pretty buttoned-up, although that could be a good thing if you have a family at home and do not want to socialize with colleagues a lot.

    Advice to Management

I think management could do a better job of facilitating events for associates rather than just summers (i.e., make the annual holiday part a lawyer-only event outside of the firm).

I have been working at Davis Polk full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Davis Polk is a great place to work. The people are very nice people and expectations are generally reasonable. Good high quality work.

    Cons

It is difficult to become partner or counsel and there is little insight given in to your changes of doing so. Best of luck to you.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. You have built a great firm. More experience for junior associates is highly advisable so please do so.

I have been working at Davis Polk full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

People are friendly, office is nice, support staff are helpful, resources are amazing.

    Cons

Biglaw is biglaw; the firm owns you, and while they're nice about it, don't expect clear boundaries between your time and theirs.

    Advice to Management

Law needs to find a way to treat its lawyers like people with needs for independent, non-work time on a more regular basis than four weeks of vacation a year.

    Pros

The reputation for a collegiate work environment and rewarding, cutting edge work is well deserved. DPW is also becoming a leader in compensation.

In the litigation department, slim to no long term advancement opportunities; no transparency or guidance as to promotion decisions

    Pros

Very pleasant within the limitations of the work.
Strong emphasis on being nice to everyone no matter what your position is.
    Your deals make headlines.
    High profits per partner.

    Cons

    They don't make partners anymore.
    Long, unpredictable hours.
You will disappoint everyone you know when you don't show up to their [soccer game, piano recital, wedding, birthday party, concert, etc.]

    Advice to Management

Make a partner one day. Adjust staffing to balance work among associates.
