I have been working at Davis Polk (Less than a year)

    Pros

Davis Polk gives opportunities to those seeking work experience. A great place to start, either in the legal or financial service field. Great environment, great people and very informative in-regards to the industry. DP helps any individual grow more professional and knowledgeable.

    Cons

Work hours can be very long. It's this way for every entry level profession.

    Advice to Management

Continue to lead a great team of intelligent individuals.

    Pros

Davis Polk has great people and interesting, high-quality work. The summer program is filled with great events and lets you get to know your class very well.

    Cons

The culture is pretty buttoned-up, although that could be a good thing if you have a family at home and do not want to socialize with colleagues a lot.

    Advice to Management

I think management could do a better job of facilitating events for associates rather than just summers (i.e., make the annual holiday part a lawyer-only event outside of the firm).

I have been working at Davis Polk full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent reputation. Wonderful staff with a great degree of control and monitoring.

    Cons

Some non-legal departments have lousy management.. Don't fully realize how changes, whether direct, or indirect, can affect newer non-legal subordinates.

    Advice to Management

Enjoy the time you have with others. Cherish the ones you have and trust more in their abilities.

I have been working at Davis Polk full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Davis Polk is a great place to work. The people are very nice people and expectations are generally reasonable. Good high quality work.

    Cons

It is difficult to become partner or counsel and there is little insight given in to your changes of doing so. Best of luck to you.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. You have built a great firm. More experience for junior associates is highly advisable so please do so.

I have been working at Davis Polk full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

People are friendly, office is nice, support staff are helpful, resources are amazing.

    Cons

Biglaw is biglaw; the firm owns you, and while they're nice about it, don't expect clear boundaries between your time and theirs.

    Advice to Management

Law needs to find a way to treat its lawyers like people with needs for independent, non-work time on a more regular basis than four weeks of vacation a year.

I have been working at Davis Polk (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The reputation for a collegiate work environment and rewarding, cutting edge work is well deserved. DPW is also becoming a leader in compensation.

    Cons

In the litigation department, slim to no long term advancement opportunities; no transparency or guidance as to promotion decisions

I have been working at Davis Polk full-time

    Pros

The environment is highly intellectual, which makes it interesting to work in and the people employed by DPW are great to learn from. I find the cafeteria to be a plus (the breakfast is top-notch).

    Cons

The hours can be quite long and unpredictable, but that's as expected, given the nature of the work. Sometimes the work/life balance is a bit difficult.
