I worked at Daytona State College full-time

    Pros

One you can get hired you can grow and further education is encouraged

    Cons

When I was hired in 2006 it was a true family work environment. The Board changed everything and it was all about the bottom line in the end.

    Advice to Management

Get out of your offices and get to know your employees and students

I worked at Daytona State College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

3 weeks' paid vacation on top of public holidays. Health & fitness facilities. Annual preventive health care gives peace of mind. Reduced-price quality lunches/dinners provided by students in the hospitality college program.

    Cons

Management was top-heavy, but may have changed since I left. Poverty line salaries for support staff. Prepare to have your embarrassingly low salary printed in the local paper for any one to see. Demoralizing.

    Advice to Management

Treat each person equitably and offer rewards based on efforts.

I worked at Daytona State College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

State pension and health/fitness benefits. In addition to the national paid holidays, employees get one week off during spring breach and two weeks' during the winter holidays...all paid. It's a great time to schedule annual appointments, take personal/family vacations, and recoup.

    Cons

Volusia/Flagler are two of the lowest-paid counties in FL, which is reflected in the abysmally low salaries for support staff.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within and empower HR to listen to workers' ideas for improving the work environment.

I worked at Daytona State College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I absolutely loved the team that I was on at Daytona State. I had access to a pretty great facility.

    Cons

Terrible pay. If Volusia County Schools can pay their employees 10k more than DSC, there is a serious problem. In fact, I happen to know that DSC has lost over a dozen employees in the last couple of months. This is due completely to the lack of pay; but also the lack of career advancement. Even for the employees who worked years for it. It's a shame that it boils down to money, but DSC currently isn't paying a wage that any normal person can live off of.

    Advice to Management

The lower level management is fully aware of the pay issue; they are also caught in that cycle. But to the upper level management, consider the concept of human capital. Reassess the salary of the upper level. Every employee plays a part in the services you provide, pay people what they deserve. At least try to match the public school system salaries. Otherwise, you're going to end up losing departments (worse case scenario) or you are going to end up spending more resources on rehiring and retraining people, who in a couple of years will expect growth and ultimately question why they work at DSC.

I worked at Daytona State College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

No micro-management whatsoever because no one really cared what you were doing. No "overtime" ever required. Lots of time off. Some colleagues really nice. If you like a slow pace and being able to do other work while on the job (which I didn't prefer), this is the place for you.

    Cons

Low pay, empty promises, difficult to advance unless you are in the upper election, difficult faculty, upper management receiving raises while everyone else suffered through a freeze on raises. Employees treated very differently; the lower level the employee, the worse they are treated.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to "the little people" who make sure this place operates.

    Pros

My coworkers were amazing and dedicated people who love students and are dedicated to their success. There are a lot of long timers at DSC who stay because they love what they do and love the students.

    Cons

Management regularly praises themselves and renames their positions so they can give raises to themselves. Employees that are not admin nor management, learn they are not part of the team, rather the employees are the equipment from which management can praise each other for their hard work.

    Advice to Management

They are doing a great job at keeping the organization top heavy.

    Pros

Great hours with the classes, loved the environment and the students. Great hourly pay and loved teaching what I loved

    Cons

Not consistent hours as an adjunct, some staff plays "favorites" on who they give the most hours to

    Advice to Management

    None

    Pros

Great Benefits, Vacation, and co workers.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Implement a performance based raise initiative.

I worked at Daytona State College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The campus is clean, faculty is very friendly, and students, for the most part, are eager to learn.

    Cons

Due to proximity to Beaches and International Speedway, difficult to commute with traffic. Also, at this smaller community college, can be difficult to get full time work.

    Advice to Management

Expanding or increasing funding for the incredible Arts Programming would allow your faculty to attract even more talented students and guest artists from a wider geographic area
