    Advice to Management

I worked at Deakin University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A proactive, well respected Vice Chancellor, scope and encouragement to try new ideas. Mixed management approaches, but mine was a positive experince. A relaxed and well-kept campus with some nice green spaces. Opportunity for internal growth and development. A fantastic city corporate centre.

    Cons

The food options at the Burwood campus are terrible. Some academics are lazy and do very little. Perhpas like most universities, there should be greater accountability. There are a lot of people in roles who don't actually do anything and some poor managers who have no corporate managerial experience to draw from.

    Advice to Management

Crack down on lazy academics and poorly qualified managers. They should be top of their game, driving accountability and leading by example. Allow additional food outlets to operate on campus.

I have been working at Deakin University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Supportive colleagues. Mostly nice physical environment. Good benefits, including salary and leave. Some job security, but only because of the work of the union and a tight EBA (I'm a union member, but nothing more).

    Cons

Management has become meaner over the past five years. Despite paying lip service to issues such as job security, and employee wellbeing, the culture is very much a "dog eat dog" one. There is secret stack ranking from faculty management, and although it isn't Hunger Games or Amazon yet, the culture is heading that way. There is an expectation, not explicitly stated, that staff work long hours, to achieve high ranking journal articles, extraordinary eValuate scores, and serve on multiple committees.

    Advice to Management

Treat your staff like people. Don't be arrogant and remote from your staff. Management need to actually care about their staff, and recognise that loyalty is a two way street.
