I have been working at Debenhams full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Think Deb's have quite a lot of stuff right... the managers are friendly, supportive.. I had a little melt down on day 2 and was hugely encouraged to stick with the programe and give the role more time, so thankful I did.
Not worked for a place where all staff regardless of grade are approachable.
The staff discount is good, even though there is a change in this... this is a huge bonus... and something the Company are not obligated to offer..

    Cons

Non comes to mind other than I think sometimes when there are changes ahead those that need to know in the lower ranks would appreciate a little more preparing time. Also once a decision is made over an issue think it is important that those that have made the decison should keep to it and not react to pressure. No one system nor policy will suit all employee's and for many any 'change' is a challenge regardless of what it is. People are people...

    Advice to Management

    On the whole well done...!!

I have been working at Debenhams full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Staff are the best part of it, only reason I stayed so long! Products and reputation are great, some customers are the nicest people you will ever meet. The company has definitely taught me so much!!

    Cons

Minimum wage, higher management don't care about staffing, everyone is replaceable. They are now removing staff discount and asking staff to get a store card in order to get discount. Have progressed me to where I am but expect me to move to another store, where the pay isn't worth the move so I am in the same position I have been for 3 years.

    Advice to Management

Take more time to appreciate your supervisors, they run the departments for you.

I worked at Debenhams part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fun staff members, easy work, engage with customers, decent pay, good location, 20% staff discount, long breaks

    Cons

poor management, shifts frequently changed at short notice, unpaid breaks, little training provided before the job.

    Advice to Management

Ensure shifts are fixed and changes are notified at least 4 weeks before the shift is due to start. Be more polite to staff.

I have been working at Debenhams part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

staff discount is ok a 25% but only if you take a staff card. company has a good progression scheme.

    Cons

management team concentrate totally on account card targets. to much pressure on staff for account cards. not nearly enough training.

    Advice to Management

    more positive reinforcement.

I worked at Debenhams full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Progression
    - Structure in place for progression e.g. levels 10-1 which have clear job descriptions of what you need to achieve
    - Usually prefers to hire internally
    - Yearly reviews to help with your progression, objective setting etc, however I imagine if your manager isn't good at these you may not benefit as they are not enforced

    Training
    - Behavioural training courses for more junior members are great. Motivational and easy to book on to

    Discount and sample sales
    - Staff discount when bought on the company credit card of up to 70%
    - Frequent sample sales for a variety of areas (great if it's your thing and size, homeware particularly good)

    Head office
    - Good location, well connected to the northern, victoria, and mainlines at Euston or a 20 minute walk to Kings Cross
    - Free tea, coffee, milk and filtered water
    - Good kitchen storage/fridges/microwaves etc and canteen space
    - Canteen is fairly well priced and seems popular with most people. Outdoor seating area in the Summer
    - Modern head office, warm, well serviced
    - Huge Regents park a 10 minute walk away great in summer, Oxford st 5 minute tube for last minute shopping needs. Sainsburys and tescos nearby and places to eat out

    People/Management
    - Ecommerce has great people who know what they are doing and work hard.
    - Management on the whole are very supportive and director levels are especially approachable. Some people are hard to work with, but this is the same in any professional environment!!
    - Great support during tough trading weeks - e.g Black Friday to keep everyone motivated (incentives and acknowledgement)

    Cons

    Progression
    - Has to be confirmed by higher levels of management and sometimes the budget is not available so regardless of performance you can't go anywhere
    - Harder to move up the higher level you go even if you are performing at a level above
    - Pay rises internally are very small £2K if you are lucky

    Training
    - A lot of the behavioural courses share content so you won't benefit from doing them all
    - No specific budget for technical courses
    - Not always encouraged to share knowledge of programs

    Head office
    - IT support in head office can be a bit slow
    - Some kitchen areas are smaller than others
    - Some desk space can be cramped and equipment needs improving
    - Meeting rooms are quite sparse for meetings and hard to book

    Trade changes
    - The nature of the beast. Last minute changes left right and centre, can be hard to deal with and make getting anything not promotionally driven done very difficult. Improvements are being made for this and new ways of working together to help.

    Pay/bonuses
    - Small bonus structure for achieving your goals, but the payout is very small and those not achieving get almost the same. Not motivating!
    - Internally almost non existent
    - Does not pay as well as other companies by far

    Pros

Great staff and training opportunities to progress if you can demonstrate you're worth investing in.

    Cons

Lower pay than other companies in same sector.

    Advice to Management

Don't wait for a letter of resignation before offering the level of pay commensurate to the value the employee adds to the company.

I worked at Debenhams part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The other members of staff in my department.
    The staff discount.

    Cons

Training was forged and never carried out.
No privacy, managers asked for your passwords for log in systems.
Sickness was laughed at, managers doubted it.
Breaks were not given as a result to very little staffing and no 'funds' to hire.
    Communication was non-existent.
Forced to do things not within your contract such as managerial tasks.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff and do a moral and ethical job.
