Good levels of autonomy and training

    Pros

-You are fully trained in using the till for all functions (Refunds, cashing up, change requests) at sales advisor level which I liked as it seems that they respect your competence and as it saved you time in many cases as you did not have to seek supervisors/managers to assist you with simple issues. -Lots of very nice staff and supervisors/managers -Good sense of community

    Cons

-Incentives for credit card sales were not at all compelling despite the emphasis and pressure put on achieving them -Some instances of favouritism with certain managers -At times too much to achieve in a short time

    Pros

Could be worse, but selling credit cards under pressure and illness being taken as a personal insult was slightly frustrating. Was easy to take holiday and organise to take/give shifts though which was good. Breaks were also never missed.

    Cons

Selling credit cards was heavily emphasised for staff, and if you’re ill, you’ll get told off for it.

    Pros

Staff discounts, good team of staff to work with, good incentives and commission for sales

    Cons

Expected to open company credit cards… this should be offered in a designated part of store as dealing with customers sensitive personal information

Easy Enough, Not the Best Though

    Nov 8, 2020 - Sales Advisor

    Pros

    - Decent working hours, latest finish being 7pm, earliest start 9am - Staff discount (eventually) - Managers were usually friendly and helpful

    Cons

    - Low pay compared to other retail jobs - Rotas published at short notice, all paper based, have to physically go in to check which is very inconvenient if you aren’t working on the day - Shifts tended to sometimes change without your permission, resulted in missing two shifts - POS system very outdated, often not working - Immense pressure to sign people on to a credit card - Company cutbacks meant there was a lot of heavy lifting and stock room duties for regular floor staff - High staff turnover with young temps coming and going, regular staff often moved around departments too - Sales advisor role can be incredibly boring and monotonous during off-peak hours - Some staff had gossip tendencies, cliques - Poor staff facilities for break / lunch times - No opportunity to climb the ladder - Sometimes had to ‘train’ younger temps despite lack of own training - Often either too over or under staffed - Serious lack of fire and heavy lifting safety precautions, especially in stock rooms, with high ladders needed to access stock often stacked 2m + on shelves

    Pros

Will always be great full for them giving me my first job. Great team of people to work with. Opportunities to work across multiple departments. Not pressuring overtime. Learning customer service skills and multiple skills that are transferable to other retail jobs. Learning how to deal with difficult customers/situations.

    Cons

The Debenhams credit card, way to much pressure made the job horrible. Always felt on edge every day that you would be in trouble for not opening them despite you trying your best and asking every customer. The email receipts, it’s not our fault customers don’t want to give out their email. Really should not have been part of the KPI’s. You can’t force someone to open a credit card or give out their email.
