Up's and Down's- Ultimately not worth the money.
Jul 25, 2014 - Senior Sales Assistant in Edinburgh, ScotlandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Friendly staff, good working hours, Great team spirit from those beneath senior management, Tasks were not too complicated, time off policies fairly clear. Staff nights out at Christmas were fun (could do with another in summer perhaps) I must say I worked in two stores and enjoyed my experiences in Livingston over Edinburgh. Sales managers often seamed to stick by there staff which was wonderful but this was not across the board. I know some colleagues had the opposite happening.
Cons
Too little staff to operate a store to maximum potential. More money spent on making store look pretty than paying for staff to keep the exceptionally high standards up meaning I often felt overworked and stressed. Focus on accounts at expense of customer happiness, A very pushy attitude towards selling them. Little expert training on specific departments led to only certain people to be trusted with specific tasks such as merchandising meaning that they had more to do in less time and were over worked. The pay does not reflect the work. Though the tasks are not always complicated the work load itself is very heavy with a lot to do on a daily basis, constantly going into sales (annoyance of how certain items are selected not always clear with ticketing and meaning we have to destroy nicely made departments for the sake of a few days). Further more the benefits such as staff discount are not as good as in some other stored.

Career suicide and company surviving on a wing and a pray without a true focus or drive.
Jul 1, 2014 - Assistant Merchandiser in London, EnglandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Most of the people who work there are fantastic and that is what makes it a great place to work. The location of the offices are great. Staff discount is good which is normally 25% off the sale price and occasionally this goes up to 35% during near xmas.
Cons
They reward people who join the company but once you have been there they take you for granted. Lack of basic visual standards in some stores (which is depressing when you see your product badly displayed and you then understand why it isn't selling) Elsewhere some decisions are made that can make no sense and down to personal whim while not commercial. We have big new offices which are unfortunately cold as everything is white. If you see the way other tenants had done the floors in the rest of the building is makes our look staid. No pictures are allowed up on the walls and management do desk checks to see how tidy they are with comments made.

Great teams, however some departmental managers need to be given the shove!
Nov 16, 2014 - Customer Services Supervisor in Winchester, EnglandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Was great to work across the different departments, to receive a higher rate of pay for working sundays and to have the option of buying shares after the first year with the company. Debenhams also offer a generous staff discount scheme and a higher wage for being the in-store first aider.
Cons
The training opportunities were ok - they offered me first aid training, customer service training etc. However, there was one particular departmental manager who should not of been working there - she was rude to the point that I left soley because of her. The rest of the team were fab.

staff discount is ok a 25% but only if you take a staff card. company has a good progression scheme.
Cons
management team concentrate totally on account card targets. to much pressure on staff for account cards. not nearly enough training.

Apr 16, 2018 - Sales Associate in Carlisle, EnglandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Staff Discount was very generous and you were able to use it online on the concessions and makeup which makes up for the poor wages.
Cons
Management have a click, supervisors belittle you, they only care about accounts, they have a short memory and they mess you around and management have no communication skills. They will run the company into the ground.
