I worked at Decorist full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Some of the most creative and talented people I have ever worked with, in both the start-up and design industry. There was always an open-door policy with leadership, and opportunity to contribute to higher level goals on all team levels.

    Cons

Similar challenges you would see at any small start-up environment, the balance of meeting demand with a small team. This challenge was always addressed and was a collaborative process to solve.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I have been working at Decorist for more than a year

    Pros

Flexible schedule, glad to be doing freelance work in the design industry

    Cons

Expectations for the designs are reasonable, but the amount of work required to complete a whole project with a client from start to finish requires too many hours for what the designers are paid. I would make more per hour working at a fast food drive-thru (not to condescend that type of work, but the pay is comparable). I work full-time for a very well known architecture firm that has high expectations for... productivity, so I am used to pumping out work fast. Decorist's pay is not even reasonable for the fastest workers, and the designs delivered suffer as a result. Also - don't expect any of your projects to be photographed to build your portfolio.

    Advice to Management

Pay your designers better!!! It will result in happier employees, better retention, better designs, and happier clients. At least pay your designers that have certifications, years of experience, etc. more than the base bay.

I worked at Decorist full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Opportunities for growth, experience

    Cons

underpaid, overworked, frustrating management, "turn and burn" mentality where they burn everyone out and just hire another person to take their place instead of fixing the problem

I worked at Decorist for more than 5 years

    Pros

Interesting concept, quick project turn around.

    Cons

The management that reviews your project is inexperienced and reviews based on their own bias which leads to very little flexibility. Their review emails are rude, condescending and sometimes even mean. Anytime a client is unhappy the fault is immediately placed on you rather than having them investigate and read through to see if the client is being unreasonable. Tons of hours to source and figure out their systems... - on top of that they request several revisions. One client even had four concepts sent to them. The fee/pay is never adjusted to accomodate for extra work so you still get paid 175 for about 30-40 hours of work. You're also required to hit an item minimum, so even if a client has a low budget and wants only 5 items, you still have to make sure you show them 15.

    Advice to Management

Talk to your designers about feedback, and maybe consider training your employees on how to write a review email that isn't nasty and tinged with attitude.

I have been working at Decorist for more than a year

    Pros

Turning around projects more quickly than in real life.

    Cons

Pathetic pay and the bonuses are a total joke. Especially for the amount of work you do. Its literally a ridiculous, insane amount of work & I'm not a Classic (entry level) designer either. The assistants that 'grade' your work before its given to the client are inexperienced nightmares. They pick on every little thing and the sad part is, the client suffers, because they have to wait and wait. Your professional... name suffers. Also, they have limited vendors to work with, which is a challenge for the designer and the client, as your design choices are limited. Yet they push and push sales, not quality design. I'm sure they are heading down the road of now shuttered Laurel & Wolf. This cannot last, as so many designers are sick of the slave wages and treatment and the clients don't get what they deserve either. Avoid.

I worked at Decorist for more than 3 years

    Pros

Was quite intensive and requirements often changed on the flight with that quite great experience.

    Cons

The management was quite tough with not allowing to argue or suggest.

    Advice to Management

    Be more flexible.

I have been working at Decorist full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Can't think of any! Everyone is just overly kind and nice to get good work from you!

    Cons

You get paid almost NOTHING for the amount of work you put in and it gets worse when you have a tough client who will never be happy! If Decorist ever decides to pay their designers legally and rightfully, then there is some hope that their talented designers will stay or else good luck!

    Advice to Management

PLEASE PAY YOUR DESIGNERS WELL IF YOU ARE DEMANDING GOOD QUALITY WORK FROM THEM!

I have been working at Decorist for less than a year

    Pros

Choose your own projects and hours.

    Cons

The amount of time it takes to source items, design, complete Decorist's write-ups for their platform, learn the platform and chat with your "clients" ... You get $75 (before any items your client's purchase through Decorist). Yep, just $75 for about 20hours of work (or more if you have a difficult client).

    Advice to Management

    PAY MORE.

I have been working at Decorist part-time for more than a year

    Pros

You get to create your own schedule and work from anywhere.

    Cons

You get paid very little for the projects you complete. Even with my availability open all week long, I’m lucky to receive more than 1-2 projects per month. Clients often back out or don’t reply at all. You spent HOURS working on one project and don’t get paid nearly enough for that time. You get paid per-project vs hourly and their pay schedule is very odd. You only get paid once a month, and it’s often during the... second or third week of the month. Might be great for a side gig but it’s not worth it if it’s something you’d want to do full-time.

    Advice to Management

Pay your designers what they’re worth. You require far too much but pay us far too little for the work we complete.
