    Pros

    Good Pay / Benefits
    Promotion Potential

    Cons

Leadership is almost non-existent in upper management.
    Low moral
    Short notice overtime requirements

    Advice to Management

    Train your supervisors!

I worked at Defense Finance and Accounting Service full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great work-life balance
    Health benefits
    Some departments offer overtime

    Cons

    Dissatisfying workplace culture;
    Unsatisfactory training
    Poor leadership/management

    Advice to Management

Never tolerate retaliation or workplace harassment! Actually hold employees accountable with errors. You have a high turnover rate with accounting technicians, have you ever stopped and investigated the reasons why, OUTSIDE of career growth reasons?!

I have been working at Defense Finance and Accounting Service full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pros are basically your typical government benefits.... health, sick leave, annual leave blah blah blah, usual stuff. Another good thing is that in certain areas you are offer unlimited overtime.

    Cons

The cons are that if you do not have an accounting degree or if you don't suck up to management then you will get overlooked no matter how much effort you put in. I was so excited to work here and after two months I was looking for a new place to work. Supervisors need to be taught how to supervise.

    Advice to Management

It's not the pay that makes people leave because people know what they are being paid before they commit to the job. Management needs serious help and the business culture needs some serious tweeking in order to retain the younger talent. (I am the younger talent)

    Pros

Work/life balance; vacation and sick leave; salary; telework (working from home).

    Cons

The training is horrendous; the average tech works from home 3 to 4 days a week and when someone is asked to come in to train a new tech, you would think you're watching a tragic scene in a play. Employees have a false sense of entitlement. Lack of upward mobility, especially if you're not a veteran and you don't play into their "politics."

    Advice to Management

When multiple employees are complaining about the same issues, please have some consideration and look it. There's a reason why your agency has low employee satisfaction and why your branch has a high turnover rate. Hence the many people moving to other branches or switching to a different agency all together. Consider trying to recruit employees who have an interest in STAYING in their position for at least a few years.

    Pros

Very flexible work schedule with the opportunity to work from home. Different departments and educational classes available.

    Cons

Difficult to advance unless you have a specific degree or knowledge of the specific position.

    Advice to Management

Please provide more training for better opportunities for advancement. More cross training would be an excellent idea.

I have been working at Defense Finance and Accounting Service full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you are a go-getter, you can move up quickly (every 52 weeks min promotion wait time). Some areas allow you to work from home - up to 4 days a week. 401k matching up to 4% + an additional 1% on top of that. Enjoy flex time and having more free time for family and hobbies.

    Cons

Minimum wait time of 52 weeks to get a promotion. Uneven distribution of workload. More engaged employees get more work.

    Advice to Management

Promotions should be based on output not length of time. Bonuses should be given more liberally - not just at annual appraisal time. Bonuses = Recognition. Not some piece of paper (cost= less than a cent). It sends a message of not caring when someone does something great and that's how you reward them. Paper award = De-motivator at best.

    Pros

Good to start out your accounting career. The work was very easy, a lot of people sit around and read books after lunch.

    Cons

A lot of drama between coworkers. No room to move up- you pretty much has to wait for someone to retire.
