I worked at Defense Finance and Accounting Service full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Variety of work to utilize public accounting skills. Greatest joy is knowing you are supporting the US men and women in the military through your work efforts. Work hard, do more than whats in the job description and career progression is great. Salary and benefits are excellent.

    Cons

Many of the automated systems are in various stages of modernization and it's sometimes frustrating when they do not process correctly.

    Advice to Management

It's good to stay focused on productivity and efficiency but not at the sacrifice of employees. Too often the balance is too much to production and not enough on employee welfare. Try to achieve a better balance. Happier employees are far more productive.

I worked at Defense Finance and Accounting Service full-time

    Pros

    competitive pay
don't have to do much work
can take longer breaks & lunches

    Cons

jobs are given based on race and if you know the person
    minorities are given preferential treatment
the place is a fat hole - you will be overweight if you dont watch yourself

    Advice to Management

don't favor people, don't target people because they don't toe the line, don't let certain races get away with doing things, don't let security act like gods when they are fat and incompetent

I have been working at Defense Finance and Accounting Service full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I get the impression no one ever gets fired.

    Cons

It seems to be a competition to see who can make the most people look bad to their boss. No one wants to ever help someone else look good.

    Advice to Management

Don't keep promoting people who breed a negative culture.

I have been working at Defense Finance and Accounting Service full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Their are plenty of opportunities to work projects or take on extra work with in your area or for the bigger DFAS unit.

The employees are generally friendly and well meaning.

Depending on the area you are in, the work life balance is great.

    Cons

I have been employed with DFAS for 12 years, while the focus has been on shifting the culture, the reality is that no one strives to actual change the culture or mindset of employees or management.

Some Senior Executives are corrupt and a bit racist, striving to align people who look and act like they do to build a coalition instead of putting the right people in the right job at the right time.

Promotions or laterals are not (generally) based on the resume but rather the grape vine gossip.

    Pros

FLexible hours, good amount of sick and annual leave. Great opportunity to move around the building and build skills.

    Cons

Easy to get lost with the amount of employees that work there

I have been working at Defense Finance and Accounting Service full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Can't beat the benefits. Also the work life balance is very strong, especially with generous telework opportunities. At times rewarding work when you can produce a tangible positive benefit that supports the War Fighter.

    Cons

Bureaucracy is inherent with government work, and the slow pace can be frustrating at times. Too many incompetent workers that deliver next to zero value. Advancing can be tough when you get relatively high up, and finding opportunities to move laterally to gain experience is also challenging. Certain senior leaders are very difficult to work with, although others are great.

    Advice to Management

Use better judgement when hiring and promoting employees. Far too many weak employees make it difficult for others to complete their work.

I worked at Defense Finance and Accounting Service full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great work-life balance
    Health benefits
    Some departments offer overtime

    Cons

    Dissatisfying workplace culture;
    Unsatisfactory training
    Poor leadership/management

    Advice to Management

Never tolerate retaliation or workplace harassment! Actually hold employees accountable with errors. You have a high turnover rate with accounting technicians, have you ever stopped and investigated the reasons why, OUTSIDE of career growth reasons?!

I have been working at Defense Finance and Accounting Service full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pros are basically your typical government benefits.... health, sick leave, annual leave blah blah blah, usual stuff. Another good thing is that in certain areas you are offer unlimited overtime.

    Cons

The cons are that if you do not have an accounting degree or if you don't suck up to management then you will get overlooked no matter how much effort you put in. I was so excited to work here and after two months I was looking for a new place to work. Supervisors need to be taught how to supervise.

    Advice to Management

It's not the pay that makes people leave because people know what they are being paid before they commit to the job. Management needs serious help and the business culture needs some serious tweeking in order to retain the younger talent. (I am the younger talent)

    Pros

    Good work life balance
    Great benefits
    Good job security
    Professional development opportunities
    We serve America's Heros!
    Decent pay
    Large base of potential positions

    Cons

    Micromanagement
    Certain leaders instill fear
Get too busy to take lunch
    Building environment makes you sick
    Difficult business model to understand
    It's Accounting... ugh

    Advice to Management

Many leaders are great but to others, get a grip on your own self-awareness, and practice what you preach!
