I have been working at Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It's a sort-of federal job with some federal employee benefits.

    Cons

Too much negativity and favoritism all around. The teaching staff is at the bottom of the hierarchy (below the military leadership/staff, students, and civilian management). When a teacher reports a student cheating on a test, the teacher gets in trouble. When another student reports a student cheating on a test, the cheater gets in trouble. Also, they overhire then do large round of RIFs every 5 years. The FPS system was devised to encourage competent employees to return to teaching and not stay in management positions, but in reality, the treatment of non-management FPS employees is considerably poorer, and once someone is able to snag a management position, they rarely return to teaching by choice. If you love teaching and want to work in a positive environment, stay as far away from this toxic place.

I worked at Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The geographical location with its multiple offerings is great; Beach, restaurants, San Francisco, multi cultural ambiance, performing arts. outdoor life-camping, fishing, etc.

    Cons

Internal politics. Favoritism. No recognition of rank, education or experience. Low pay, Monterey living is VERY VERY EXPENSIVE. Manipulating student's performance performance in order to present favorable reports to Management and Administration.

    Advice to Management

    USE PROFESSIONALS IN ADMINISTRATIVE EDUCATION.

I worked at Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - wonderful working to teach and serve US servicemen
    - multicultural environment is quite stimulating
    - matching 401K or Roth IRA up to 3% and then 50% match for 4th and 5th%

    Cons

    - primary work location has a very high cost of living
    - little to no educational support (ironic for an educational institution)
    - ineffective merit pay system that does more harm than good
    - no mentoring program or mentoring emphasis
    - servant leadership model preached but not practiced by many senior - middle managers
    - often times very low morale stemming from lack of faith in middle to senior managers

    Advice to Management

    - take time to mentor middle managers, junior managers, supervisors, and line workers and invest in their development
    - practice what you preach
