    Negative Outlook

I worked at Delaware County Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The college is pretty well organized

    Cons

Admins and full-time faculty do not always make the most intelligent decisions. It's a community college, so students demonstrate a wide-range of abilities and personalities. As an adjunct you are exploited- ie payed far less than full-time faculty, asked to cover other professors classes (at least the STEM Dean Schwartz routinely asks this of adjunct faculty). Unless you are retired or looking to modestly supplement your income, I would stay away from adjuncting at DCCC as DCCC is a career dead-end.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to make pay merit based (ie increase adjunct salary, eliminate tenure). Higher fewer "Deans."

I have been working at Delaware County Community College (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place to work and learn! For the most part, with few exceptions, the administrators, faculty and staff are friendly and welcoming. Students often comment about the quality of the education they have received at the college. Salaries are competitive and parking for students, faculty, administrators and staff is plentiful. Many of the college's campuses have been reconstructed or improved, so the facilities are top notch.

    Cons

By and large, there are few "cons" about the college. Like any large organization, there is a level of bureaucracy that sometimes gets in the way of getting things done quickly and efficiently. However, a new work management system that was just implemented may help. As the college's student base becomes more ethnically diverse, it will need to do more to create a welcoming environment, including hiring more people of color and infusing diverse perspectives and courses into the curriculum. The year 2017 will prove very interesting because the college's president plans to retire, so a new president must be hired. And, once the new president takes over, she/he will set about hiring a new provost to replace the acting provost. The college also has several academic dean positions it must fill soon.

    Advice to Management

Build on strengths; infuse diversity throughout the college; hold the line on costs; work harder and smarter at retaining and recognizing exceptional faculty, administrators and staff, who are the key to the college's success

I have been working at Delaware County Community College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and higher compensation than comparable positions at other schools. Great if you like working with first-generation students. 231 hours of accrued personal and vacation time each year. Free parking. You're able to participate in interdisciplinary committees around the College that offer you exposure to other segments of the industry.

    Cons

    No merit based raises.
Not a lot of funds invested in professional development.
    Personnel resources are being stretched.

    Advice to Management

We need to enforce performance evaluations, and we need to incentivize great work. Given our population, we also need to consider how we can offer more services on Saturdays.

    Pros

Good opportunity to get experience when you are getting back into career after absence. I was a stay at home mom for more than 10 years, but I have a master's degree. I couldn't find work at most places since I had this gap. But they took a chance on me, and I found that I love teaching. They provide opportunity for growth through training and symposium.

    Cons

Mostly want part time adjunct faculty - if you are looking for full time work it's more difficult to find employment.

    Advice to Management

I think it's great that you are willing to give a chance to people like me who want to get back into a career. I think that it's important to access how available the person is due to their life situation and how willing they are to grow.
