I worked at Dell full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good Benefits, Legacy of Good, Contribution Matching, Socially Responsible, Environmentally Friendly - proactive to make advancements and improvements globally.

Experience gained working for an organization that is in excess of 100,000+ employees was valuable. I met and worked with some interesting people and appreciated new perspectives. My advice is to be patient when you first join. It will take time to onboard and learn to navigate. If you are committed to your role, you'll gain some new insights, experience and get a sense for the culture.

    Cons

Very difficult on boarding/integrating into the company if you are acquired. Systems need improvement. Not a good chance of being heard if you are not a director or above. Tell Dell doesn't work to get true feedback - nice idea but it is flawed.

Lack of resources when searching for new employees. Internal recruiter req loads seem to be consistently high.

    Advice to Management

Improve new employee (from acquired company) on boarding and integration process. Provide "live human" access to internal tech support especially for remote employees. Find a more effective way to hear from individual contributors.

Keep up Legacy of Good and caring for the world beyond the doors of Dell. You're a shining example in the corporate world!

I have been working at Dell full-time

    Pros

Nothing specifically stands out as a pro - Its not all negative. Its a large company with good people. I am disappointed that Executive leadership does not do more to lead and challenge new areas.

    Cons

Embraced Welch ideas on cost without the focus on building something new (market, technology, business)

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on run-rate but start pushing the edge.

I have been working at Dell full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Dell is a great place to work, the people are great, the culture is very consensus oriented, and they believe in the community. Job opportunities are abundant where investment is deemed necessary, though much of this seems very short-term given the amazing growth and changes Del is going through.

    Cons

Strategy seems sound, but tactically many organizations are in chaos. There is no strategic top to bottom. More top is strategy, bottom is pure tactics. Like many corporations there is very filtered discussion around strategy. Sharing challenges, cons or other areas of problems is not shared well. The culture focuses on the pros. The open door policy is good when the news is good, otherwise best to keep to yourself. 2 things truly bother me here. Firstly, there is little strategic planning across BUs (including cross-selling GTM activities), and little if any from the Executive Director level down. Much of what occurs below VPs appears to be very reactive. This affects people greatly, often having to "work around" process issues, system issues and departmental dysfunction.

    Advice to Management

Strategic planning top down and bottom up will help to identify the organizational, process, and infrastructure limitations that either need to be remediated before agreeing on a strategy, or are unimplementable realistically given tactical adjustment and churn that will consume staff. Hire more executives that are given authority to take risks and are thought and change agents. There is complacency and an unwillingness of some executives in Services to "put themselves out there". Transformation starts with knowing and acknowledging where leadership is limited creatively. Michael Dell is a incredible business leader, willing to take risks; he needs managers below him with a similar willingness to fail sometime to then succeed long term.

    I worked at Dell full-time

    Pros

Decent benefits and vacation time. Beyond that it's just a job. The work load is manageable and there is a decent work/life balance.

    Cons

Absolutely no room for moving up. You will be promised a bunch of great opportunities that will never come about. There isn't much support and most of the company above you are outsourced Indians who are grossly incompetent and just make your job much more difficult

    Advice to Management

Get rid of all the outsourced Indians. Start working to recruit from you own people and give them a chance to move up.
