    Pros

    Among all the interns, I got lucky cause I got a really good project manager that allowed me to work on building a prototype with any technology that I wanted to use. Therefore I got a lot of experience in development and even pitching my idea to clients.

    Cons

    It's very rigid and there's not a lot of freedom. If you end up under a project manager that is not as nice, then you don't get to work on fun projects.

    Advice to Management

    Allow the employees to work on stuff that they are interested or find a way to allow them to have fun doing what they do

    You learn a lot.
    The people are great.
    The pay is good relative to COL in the area.
    Benefits are decent.

    Cons

    Little regard for what your career goals are.
    It's very difficult to change trajectory once you start.
    Good luck moving to data analytics or business analysis if you start as a developer.

    Advice to Management

    Ask the interns one simple question "Do you know what you want to do?"
    If the answer is no. place them where you see fit. If the answer is yes, try to accommodate them. You will see lower turn-over rate and happier returning full-timers.

    Pros

    Flexibility, access to excellent training and development tools and resources, generous PTO, each employee has a coach/counselor and on-boarding adviser to help with performance and development, many talented and friendly colleagues, culture of excellence. Although it did not work out for me, I still believe it is a great option for many others and I have seen many inspiring success stories for myself.

    Cons

    The USDC business that I supported does not operate the same way that the Deloitte Core Consulting practice operates, so much of my initial training and expectations did not apply once I was on the job. Networking and relationships are critical to success there, and this is a double-edged sword, In my case, I established great relationships with virtually everyone except the primary decision-makers. I was constantly told that it takes a year to learn my role, but was only given 4 months. Also, every obstacle faced was attributed to some type of "learning curve" on my fault, including not being included on emails or in conversations regarding information I was supposed to be tracking or data errors that I later learned were happening across the board. My experience was completely different from those of my peers working in other areas of the firm, including some who started on the same day. Much of the Deloitte culture that I researched was not the same in the USDC.

    Advice to Management

    Consider using more of a 360-degree evaluation approach, even for new hires. Train coaches to consider all options in problem-solving, not simply assuming that everything they are told is accurate. Ask questions and investigate the true cause of issues or challenges rather than assuming everything is due to a learning curve or employee shortcoming. Also, no employee should ever be blindsided by a termination (i.e. being told on a Tuesday that things were "great" then terminated on a Wednesday). In the unfortunate event that you do need to terminate someone, doing so by phone then asking that the person drive back to the office to return company property is not the most sensitive option. Consider inviting the person to the office so that a member of HR can deliver the news in person or at least be there while the news is delivered on-site. Overall, I still believe Deloitte is a great opportunity but the USDC has a culture entirely its own (not a judgment, simply an observation).
