I worked at Deloitte (More than a year)

    Pros

High audit quality, good healthcare plans

    Cons

Firm culture in Jacksonville, FL was unbearable - negative and toxic. However, other offices (e.g., Boca Raton) are much better.

    Advice to Management

Do not tolerate negative, toxic behavior, just because work is getting done. My whole team fell apart because of toxic senior manager and a senior.

    Advice to Management

Need to change the promotion criteria so that personality and cultural diversity can co-exist with partner culture

I worked at Deloitte full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Deloitte provides myriad opportunities to gain business and project management skills that can be applied in many industries. My colleagues were incredibly hard working, smart, sharp people. Although I think that women and minorities are at a disadvantage in every organization, Deloitte is much more forward-thinking than many in terms of social and gender equity. Leadership has also allowed people to have more relaxed dress codes when possible and encouraged shorter meetings. The health insurance is fantastic and there is an excellent family leave policy, plus a health and fitness subsidy, a corporate card you are encouraged to use for work happy hours, and discounts from a bunch of vendors.

    Cons

One of the biggest issues is that the onus of finding a project is on the individual junior practitioner, but the availability of projects is determined by the competence of leadership - so when people are "on the bench," it's not necessarily because they are turning down opportunities, but the performance model punishes people for things that are often outside their control. In the Federal practice, the projects tend to be very long and not particularly fulfilling. Despite the adage that "you own your career," you don't. You often can't roll off projects because it's more important to provide a consistent experience for clients. Despite the message from leadership to value a diversity of educational backgrounds, MBAs are paid significantly more than people with other masters or even doctorate degrees. Vacation days are extremely generous, but it's an empty benefit because utilization metrics are too high to allow you to take days off. The 401K matching is low (maximum is 1.5% of salary) and it takes 4 years to vest. There is a lot of what feels like busywork - internal projects that never go anywhere, proposals that get abandoned or are lost, coffee meetings that keep getting postponed. Organizationally, it felt like the loudest voice in the room always wins - it's not a place for introverts. It's also hard to figure out what exactly anyone does, because there's a lot of consultanese and self-promotion. Although the Federal practice is supposed to be less demanding than Commercial, I routinely worked 50-60 hour weeks.

    Advice to Management

Continue improving transparency: ensure consistency in pay scales, that pay scales for different levels don't overlap, and have open conversations about the realities and expectations for projects. Reward people for what they actually do and how their expertise wins work, especially when it's something different than an MBA.

I worked at Deloitte full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Smart people
    - Great analyst program
    - Training opportunities
    - Good exit opps

    Cons

    - Was a Strategy & Operations Business Analyst out of NY straight from college - was on the beach for 11 weeks within the first few months.. this was the case with a lot of my other fellow analysts as well
    - When you are finally staffed, you have little control over what projects you're staffed on, and are usually stuck with very not so glamorous work - in industries such as healthcare compliance, financial services, etc., and in roles such as project management, even administrative work at times (e.g., there was a project where analysts were doing processing work)
    - The politics is hard to fathom at times. If the head of your client account is someone high up / influential, it's hard to get off that project. Also, when you are getting staffed, most times there is very little regard for what you want to do; if you try to decline, it looks extremely bad and your performance review could be affected

    Advice to Management

    - Talk about staffing at recruiting events.. I've heard people on recruiting teams specifically say they purposefully don't talk about staffing to potential candidates. Since this is a huge part of the job, it's vital you talk about Deloitte's staffing process and be transparent and fair to candidates
    - Stay true to the BA rotational program that you promise at recruiting events - it shouldn't be pulling teeth to get off of a project if a BA has been on it for 6 months
    - Don't provide counselors, other support figures, etc. to give the impression that an analyst is well supported - and not have that be true. The moment a BA remarks negatively on an aspect (e.g., situation related to staffing), senior folks roll their eyes and bark back - fosters a tense culture and environment, and is hypocritical

    Pros

Some seniors are friendly and interested in your career path

    Cons

little variety in work not just as an intern, but also seeing full-time employees; unpredictable hours

    Advice to Management

better training the first week on DCFs, MAA, and IAA rather than Deloitte culture/goals/expectations using up the first two days

I worked at Deloitte full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You have access to a lot of people and information if you are willing to learn and work hard. The benefits are great. Great for your resume!

    Cons

A big challenge is US staff are having a harder time developing skills from learning the nuts and bolts of engagements due to managers being forced to send a large amount of work to Indian Staff. Because you are forced to use Indian staff engagements are often improperly staffed, and of course all of this is done without the client knowing the extent of it. Seniors, Managers, and Senior managers leave creating a vacuum of properly trained less senior staff to replace them.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your managers, they are the ones bearing the burden of poor staffing decisions being made by upper management.
