I worked at Deloitte (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Yes, they had a solid benefit package...

    Cons

but don't you dare use the PTO because you will get slammed for it.

Your expected to work 40 billable hours week..sounds fair, right? To get you target you need to work 52x40=2080 hrs. Anything short and you 'fail to meet expectations'...so look at it..say you need 2 weeks away (80 hrs), that doesn't count as billable hours. you would then have to work 8 weeks at 50 hrs a week just to break even, and since you would be gone from the project for so long, a good chance you would be replaced and it would be incumbent on you to find another project so you could start making billable hours again.

That type of thinking permeates the entire company, at least in the DC area.

    Advice to Management

If they were listening, they wouldn't suffer the turn over they have.

I worked at Deloitte full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

High pay and can work from home sometimes. You are in control of your own career. Lots of free drinks if you're into that.

    Cons

You have to find your own positions to work at which can be very stressful. Work long hours. Networking is more important than quality of work.

    Advice to Management

I do not have advice to management other than stop overworking employees. But the management does this knowing turnover will be high because this is the optimized solution for making money in consulting.

    Pros

Great brand name for your resume. Access to good, high level thought work. Good benefits.

    Cons

Work life balance nonexistent. Performance ratings biased if you aren't on deck or up for promotion.

    Advice to Management

You have a significant problem living up to your talk regarding diversity and inclusion for underrepresented minorities, in particular. Particularly at the partner level. You are a data driven company. Run the numbers on how the Deloitte culture of cliques and your new performance management system affects retention and fair treatment of Underrepresented minorities. Open your eyes and address this - but, please do it better than you are "addressing" the longstanding low ratings re: work life balance. It is your culture. Run culturepath on yourself or do an innovation lab or something.

I worked at Deloitte full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Deloitte as a whole is a big company. Very well respected and the name brings many benefits. As of this review I have been working with Deloitte for 2.5 years and I can say that once you work here, finding another job will never be hard again. Other companies see it again give you a level of respect which makes interviews much easier than before. Also Deloitte is one of the FEW companies which offer a pension plan along with a 401k.

    Cons

Where do I begin is the question lol For one, being a big company, the idiom "dog eat dog world"LITERALLY applies here. This company, is BIG on how much brown-nosing you do and how much of you personal life are you willing to give up. Those employees who kiss up and talk down to other and treat other like crap, are the ones who succeed and get promoted. Its almost like Deloitte has no standards as to how they promote people, which is sad because there are some VERY unqualified people in leadership positions (Senior Consultant, Manager, Senior Manager). The leadership at Deloitte are so title driven and will do anything to protect themselves from those they perceive as a threat (people with ideas, people who propose change, people who want to contribute)

Deloitte also claims that they have "work/life balance" but that is all a facade. In order to be successful, you must be willing to work outside of the office (CPE hours, proposal writing, work longer than expected, work weekends). Its funny, because, during my tenure, there are people who actually have this mentality and think its ok.

If you are deciding to work here, I would say take the opportunity if it comes. Again, it looks great on your resume and I think this the MAIN reason anyone should go work for Deloitte. Outside of the name, there are so many other companies that do the same type of work and offer MUCH less stress.

    Advice to Management

PLEASE change your process for determining those who receive leadership positions. You are electing people based on how well they brown-nose versus on how well they make those around them better.

I have been working at Deloitte full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    -- competent people
-- flexibility because you choose your projects
-- firm tries to create communities through various networking events (intent is there)
    -- computer/phone is a nice perk

    Cons

-- EXTREMELY risk adverse which is counterproductive to the federal space
-- good vacation time but using it risks your utilization, so it goes wasted
-- experienced hires come in as consultants, so managers are usually younger, with less work experience and coming into their own
-- does not take constructive criticism well; pretends to understand federal space more than it does which is a big liability
-- chip on their shoulder. frustrating.
-- focused on business development more than the client or employees

    Advice to Management

Advice to management would do not good because they won't take it.

I worked at Deloitte full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Great reputation (really good for resume)
    -Lots of training opportunities
    -High quality coworkers
-Lots of reimbursable expenses (meals, parking, commuting costs)
-Good vacation (5 weeks, but still have to hit your billable hours target which can be difficult if your on a federal contract that only lets you bill 40 hours a week)
-Great parental leave (2 months paid when I was there, I heard it's now 4 months)

    Cons

    -Underpaid (I was paid $86,500 and when I left I had offers of 105, 115, 125, and 132)
-Expectation to do work outside of billable hours unreasonable (it's not that you have extra work to do, that should be expected basically anywhere. The problem is they don't communicate what kind of work is actually important and what isn't. A lot of people are running around doing "firm activities" because they think it makes them look good but it doesn't really make a difference.)
-Extremely bureaucratic and hierarchical (the senior managers and partners tightly control interaction with the client making it very difficult to do your job. There are layers and layers of review with minimal input going in each time.)

    Advice to Management

More transparently communicated the kinds of "firm activities" that are important and that employees should focus on.

For federal work, steer away from low margin staff augmentation. Stop pretending you don't do staff augmentation as that is the majority of the work you do. If you are going to continue doing staff augmentation, do not sign time and material contracts that don't allow employees to pursue meaningful careers at Deloitte.

Pay people commensurate market rates. Deloitte has a lot of perks. I probably would have stayed if you came even close but you weren't interested.

I worked at Deloitte full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Deloitte provides a wide array of services to clients, allowing practitioners to be involved in a wide selection of industries, services, and concentrations. Deloitte invests quite a bit into new practitioner training, spending almost 2 weeks at the state of the art private university, Deloitte University.

    Cons

When you are new to the firm, especially as a first job, be prepared to find your own project with very little help from management or the firm. People are extremely busy, and while they may be friendly, they don’t have time to help you onboard socially or experimentally. This can make it very hard to break in to the project scene and get off on the right foot. Make sure to ask about finding a project and what to do if it is hard to find projects in your first few weeks.

    Advice to Management

Provide more substantial assistance to new practitioners in finding project engagements. Especially as a first job, it is daunting and difficult to jump into consulting culture and feel like you have to look for a job within a job, with little to no help from upper management.
