I worked at Deloitte full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent wages, very transparent on promotion, welcoming to people from all backgrounds and walks of life, great back office support. Upper management is very approachable.

    Cons

Very little choice in project selection. If you don't like your specialization it is almost impossible to change. You are your resume, not what you want to be. If you give up 70+ hours a week for 30+ years you will 100% be a millionaire.

    Advice to Management

Give people more of an ability to shape their careers. There will be less turnover.

Lots of administrative overhead at the manager and above level. Probably higher than average as compared to other BIG 4.

I worked at Deloitte full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, smart colleagues, interesting projects (when you can network your way into them), reasonable workload (federal is much less demanding than commercial), and true concern for your professional development

    Cons

Lack of alignment of skill sets and interests to projects, bids on lots of staff aug work and can result in projects with lack of funding (i.e. I had a team that had to drive 6 hours a day to and from client site because the manager under-bid and didn't let us get hotels), and lack of true development of leaders vs. managers

    Advice to Management

Bid on quality work that will empower your employees, not just any contract out there. Focus on developing managers that are leaders, not micro-managers, and in my experience there was a true lack of accountability at the mid-level to leadership and over-scrutiny to junior staff members. I.e. would have an SC come in at 10 and leave at 4 everyday but bill 8 hours a day, while as the lowest on the totem pole I would have to overwork to compensate for her incompetence and laziness. She got promoted to M the next year....

I worked at Deloitte full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Great reputation (really good for resume)
    -Lots of training opportunities
    -High quality coworkers
-Lots of reimbursable expenses (meals, parking, commuting costs)
-Good vacation (5 weeks, but still have to hit your billable hours target which can be difficult if your on a federal contract that only lets you bill 40 hours a week)
-Great parental leave (2 months paid when I was there, I heard it's now 4 months)

    Cons

    -Underpaid (I was paid $86,500 and when I left I had offers of 105, 115, 125, and 132)
-Expectation to do work outside of billable hours unreasonable (it's not that you have extra work to do, that should be expected basically anywhere. The problem is they don't communicate what kind of work is actually important and what isn't. A lot of people are running around doing "firm activities" because they think it makes them look good but it doesn't really make a difference.)
-Extremely bureaucratic and hierarchical (the senior managers and partners tightly control interaction with the client making it very difficult to do your job. There are layers and layers of review with minimal input going in each time.)

    Advice to Management

More transparently communicated the kinds of "firm activities" that are important and that employees should focus on.

For federal work, steer away from low margin staff augmentation. Stop pretending you don't do staff augmentation as that is the majority of the work you do. If you are going to continue doing staff augmentation, do not sign time and material contracts that don't allow employees to pursue meaningful careers at Deloitte.

Pay people commensurate market rates. Deloitte has a lot of perks. I probably would have stayed if you came even close but you weren't interested.
