    Advice to Management

    Pros

Intelligent co-workers; people know what they are doing and work diligently to do more, with less people as IT in particular is often stretched to its limits. Opportunities are present to expand your skillset with regard to exposure to new technologies. Good benefits.

    Cons

Horrible environment for DBA's. Overworked and lack of appropriate treatment, even for the most experienced personnel. Turnover rate in the DBA world here is VERY high. In the number of 9+ people over the course of 5 years. Most are not asked to leave, but leave after their experiences leave them less than satisfied. The DBA's are responsible for keeping the mission-critical data sources online and performing well and are treated as if they do no more than answer phone calls. The environment is not DBA-friendly, at all.

    Advice to Management

Place the same value on ALL employees. It seems there is a hierarchy for the treatment and the DBA's are near the bottom of the heap. The high turnover rate is not a normal situation at other places of employment, you should take a VERy close look at what is causing this turnover and make changes to improve things as you have lost some excellent people that are not easily replaced (well, they are...but then those folks end up leaving too).

    Pros

Small company, felt like a family. You had vast opportunities that would not otherwise be available in a larger organization. Truly believes in their mission and it is woven into everything they do

    Cons

Small company, many hats are worn

I have been working at Delta Dental of Washington full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Everything done at Delta Dental is focused on the mission.Staff believe in the mission and are committed to improvement. There are opportunities to contribute and get involved in aspects of the company outside of your primary role. The healthcare industry is challenging and exciting to be a part of due to the change and potential impact an organization can have upon the population and customers served.

The organization is small enough for individuals or small teams to make a difference or make real contributions that affect the organization or external stakeholders. There is no shortage of thinking and potential ideas on how to serve the mission.Technologies are mostly up to date and there are opportunities to try new things or ways of doing new things. Everyone in the organization is accessible.

The operations teams are tight knit, work hard and have a lot of fun. Customers that interact with these teams constantly praise their experience with them. There are amazing new adventures to be a part of from technology, sales, operations to marketing. There is not a group within the organization that gets overlooked when it comes to ways to contribute.

    Cons

The organization is staffed fairly light for the number of initiatives that occur. This can put stress on certain areas. Part of that stress is a result of communication. It can be difficult for everyone to feel informed or involved in everything that occurs. This is typical of organizations that embrace change but can be masked in larger organizations. The focus on innovation and openness to new ideas can make it feel like there is not pinpoint focus but the alternative would be pinpoint focus with a lack of openness to alternative ideas.

Process can be used as an obstacle at times by some people. There is attention paid in an attempt to optimize processes but part of being Federally regulated means process is necessary for many aspects of working with healthcare data. Some people forget the purpose of the process and misuse it.

As people come into the organization they can bring an expectation that what was best for their previous employer is best for all employers or they want to do what is best for their career. That is not the case at Delta Dental. Delta Dental will do what is best for the mission and its customers. This can lead to either confusion or a sense of not being heard. Management teams could do a better job facilitating the culture and communication or hiring process to avoid this issue. The ideas are heard but everyone can't do everything they want.

Everyone is accessible but extremely busy. Time is made for conversation but can seem rushed or unfinished at times as a result. Meetings can lose focus easily as one individual can spend too much time on their topic and not leave enough time to cover what needs to be covered. Which means another meeting to replace the original meeting.

    Pros

    - Good people that believe in the work they accomplish and are connected to the mission of the org
    - It's got a small company feel. Managers and Directors and Senior Executives say hi and call people by name, and we don't have faceless men leading the company that we haven't ever met..
    - The company thinks about the future, their role in the marketplace, and how to remain competitive

    Cons

    - The company is incredibly manager-heavy and inflexible. People do not have agency or freedom to innovate independently and make their jobs better, even though the company consistently claims innovation is important/valued.
    - Processes are a burden and MUST BE FOLLOWED
    - Lines of communication are non-existent. I hear about new initiatives and projects or changes from my friends that know managers before I even begin to hear real answers from upper management.

    Advice to Management

Have less of you? Why are there so many Directors for such a small company? Let your employees have ideas and act on them.

    Pros

fantastic benefits, flexible schedule, the mission of improving oral health in Washington is inspiring.

    Cons

Salaries are disturbingly low for front line to mid-level management. Tenure is too highly relied upon for advancement; employees with Masters Degrees working under leaders with no college education, simply because the manager has been with the company for over a decade - but without any experience or formal education in the field they are managing. Very defined line between front-line employees and management - its the "haves and the have-nots." Even the bonus structure favors those who make the most money already.
