I have been working at Democrats for Education Reform full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Strong leadership under current president, Shavar Jeffries. Significant improvements in finance and operations. Fun place to work with smart, effective colleagues, especially on the national political and policy teams. Lots of autonomy in all roles and room for growth.

    Cons

Not a lot of systems/processes in place. You always have to advocate for yourself. (But this is a pro in many ways too, given the # of over-systematized/rigid ed reform organizations and charter schools.)

I have been working at Democrats for Education Reform full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Staff is welcoming and very supportive, leadership is considerate and open to new ideas, employees have deep understanding and knowledge of their fields and eager to share. As a newcomer to both politics and education, I feel obligated to comment on how helpful everybody has been and how committed leadership has been to give me the tools to succeed.

    Cons

After six months of employment I haven't found any

    Pros

Doing great work that puts kids first.

    Cons

    None I can think of.

I worked at Democrats for Education Reform full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Started under the new management and don't understand the negative reviews of the past. Shavar has created a workplace that's focused on making tangible differences for students that need it. The people who work here are progressives and Democrats who care deeply about their work. The political team (Patrick, Harrison, and Chris) are especially great. Glad to have had the privilege to work here!

    Cons

    None that come to mind!

    Pros

The people for the most part are great, except the handful of diva state directors. Joe Williams, former Executive Director and now Board Member was absolutely amazing.

    Cons

The new Executive Director, lawyer by trade, has made everything corporate-like, thus eliminating the family environment that used to be there. The "SLT" (Senior Leadership Team) has always succumbed to the diva State directors, who many times act like spoiled brats when they don't get their way, and throw temper tantrums knowing that they'll get their way in the long run.

    Advice to Management

Support your National team, don't just throw them under the bus. Hold everyone accountable, ESPECIALLY state-directors that do borderline illegal things and get away with it!

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Democrats for Education Reform full-time

    Pros

With the change in upper management and CEO (Joe Williams is no longer there), the only pro is that they used to pay for healthcare and will reimburse cellphones for those that use them for work.

    Cons

Be wary, the culture is toxic with no want to change for the better. Men are promoted and paid more than women in this organization, and those that perform well and exceed are stifled and pushed out. Only management is encouraged to take time off and any time away from the office is not respected (for instance, constant emails, texts and calls with demands to be answered)

I worked at Democrats for Education Reform full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good colleagues but the best are leaving or have already left.

    Cons

Poor leadership, no strategic planning or vision. Increased turnover in the last year that will continue until organization completely fails.
