I worked at Dendreon (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay and benefits are the only decent thing about this company. There is nothing else that I can think of.

    Cons

The employees are so busy trying to show Valeant how valuable they are to the company that they step on each other. It's always such a frenzy that the upper management have up a smoke screen to make the employees feel secure in their roles. Meanwhile, they are promoting a drug that is a one time treatment with a ridiculously complicated process to manufacture.

    Advice to Management

Stop micromanaging people; they are grown ups. Stop hiring people only to treat them like outcasts; you would avoid the high turnover rate. Spend some money on R&D and develop a pipeline; your one treatment will not last forever. Stop using the same plan that caused your bankruptcy; it didn't work the first time.

I have been working at Dendreon full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people and product (immunotherpy drug for prostate cancer).
Excellent pay, benefits, training and culture.

    Cons

Poor product launch led to being bought by Valeant Pharmaceuticals.
Annual layoffs as a result of poor product launch and poor financial decisions.

    Advice to Management

Involve employees more by bringing back round table meetings with senior management and board members. Dendreon employees are very knowledgeable and the desire to be heard.

    Pros

product, production and delivery were very unconventional and brought interesting challenges for many types of professionals; I always had allies, and they took me from a position where I was wasting my education to one where I began to build on it and network with other people that wanted to solve business problems scientifically; the numerous post-launch clinical trials the company paid for gave me complete faith in the product and future products

    Cons

there was a lot of waste and also a lot of underutilization; many of the big challenges of the unconventional model were solved with bodies and salaries, no big surprise; salespeople, their promises to the board, and the board comprised 90% of what Dendreon was to me -- and no one wanted to admit that our repeat subscribers were too few to make us a hot investment; seeing almost all effort go to "new business" makes you feel like you're selling snake oil even if you believe in the product (and there is zero reason to question the product)
