I have been working at Denim Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

An amazingly talented and experienced staff in the realm of application security. For assessments, pen tests, SDLC review, etc. I cannot imagine a company where you will be able to contribute and learn more in this field than you can here.

For development, Denim Group works on a product in the application security space that's been seeing huge growth recently. For a developer, this product represents some deeply fascinating challenges to solve in area of security as well as an ambitious and cutting edge series of features in its roadmap.

    Cons

Denim Group is a small company with all the ups and downs that come with it. You get to participate in a growing company where your ideas and desires for future direction get heard and recognized by the owners, but on the flip side, discretionary budget doesn't allow for extravagant corporate events. Up to you what kind of environment you're looking for, but this one has a "small town" feel. I actually like that.

I worked at Denim Group full-time

    Pros

Camaraderie, company events, snacks, small-company vibe, flexibility, colorful office, casual dress

    Cons

Poor compensation. Ex: developers easily find better opportunities, making decision to leave inevitable.

    Advice to Management

Compensate your staff to reflect how much they are worth to the company...BEFORE they look elsewhere and receive an offer they can't refuse. The developer attrition, for example, is proof-positive that you are low-balling the staff. Stop pinching pennies. Losing staff kills morale and perpetuates more loss.

    Pros

    Cutting edge, important work.
    Immensely talented work force.
Good customers that are sincerely appreciative if employee effort.

    Cons

Small group means there is no place to hide.
    Small company means limited resources.

    Advice to Management

Better sharing of company vision. Do we have an orientation?

I have been working at Denim Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you want to do application security this might be the place for you. Application Security projects is the vast majority of their work. Good place to learn about or become better at Application Security

    Cons

Software Developers should consider other alternatives, there is no software development work here. On president's day they had a layoff, the majority of them were programmers. Everyone here who still wants to do software development either can work on their application security tool; or should update their resumes and consider other options. In the last few months besides the layoff, there have been compensation freezes and other large cuts. A large number of programmers have left the company over the last 6 months, to include what I would consider the spiritual development manager and soul of the company and the lead tool developer who was responsible for great ideas and direction of their tool.

    Advice to Management

Several months ago when management talked to us about the shortage of application development projects, if they would have been honest, the programmers who didn't want to do security could have found a new job and there would not have needed to be a layoff. Be honest with the employees.

I worked at Denim Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They were very interested in adding training and building the employees, allowing for progression, generally had a pretty good spread of different tasks and projects for developers, and were generally very open about how things operated.

    Cons

Some ambiguous internal policies--having devs teach coworkers about something is a great idea, and while I was there, it was held as an annual requirement, but seemed to somewhat quietly fall off the list.

    Advice to Management

Keep on keeping on? Didn't seem like there were any real issues I had with how things were operating while I was there.

    Pros

The ability to have your input heard is one of the biggest positives of this job. The compensation is more than fair, the benefits are great, and the people are fun.

    Cons

Being a smaller company means that sometimes things are a bit disorganized, but it is part of the growing pains of an up and coming business.

I have been working at Denim Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are many positive qualities that differentiate the company from others I have worked for in the past. Some of these qualities include:

-Strong strategic planning which helps sustain long-term growth of the company.
-A willingness to invest in employee professional growth.
-Flexible work schedules which help maintain a good work/life balance.
-A relaxed company culture with notable community involvement.
-An involved leadership team that engages employees and listens to feedback so that the company can overcome any challenge that arises.
    -A culture built on trust.

    Cons

It is tough to be in the fast-paced consulting industry and be 100 perfect. With growth comes challenges like establishing or updating policies, processes, and procedures. If you are an individual who absolutely needs these to function, you may be disappointed in operations. Things do get better if you can deal with the challenges.

    Advice to Management

Continue to listen to employee feedback, and take calculated risks. This is really paying off. Denim Group is definitely a great place work with top talent who wants to see Denim Group continue to be successful.
