    Pros

Varied and gives you a lot of responsibility. If doing international work get opportunity to travel

    Cons

Pay and pension conditions have been severely eroded over the years. Expected to do long hours with no equivalent renumeration.

    Advice to Management

Need to be more visible to staff and ensure that they feel included and understand their contribution and value to the overall department objectives particularly with further cost cutting on the horizon.

I worked at Department for Transport full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Some really interesting areas of work and some very capable people who genuinely strive to make good decisions based on evidence and careful consideration of facts.

    Cons

Sadly, also a lot of people who don't really care, think they are worth far more than their already generous pay and pension and who don't live in reality. As a result the Department is massively under resourced and the capable minority are hugely over-stretched.

    Advice to Management

A root and branch review is needed to determine which activities the Department should be doing and which can be dumped. Last time there was a restructure far too many peoole were involved and so most made good cases for why their work was essential and had to continue. So you've ended up with some of the dead wood cleared out, fewer staff but not much less work.

    Pros

I love the ambition of the department and what we are trying to achieve and feel my own work area mirrors that. A really friendly department too.

Some bureaucracy but less than other places I've worked. Very London based corporate centre.

I worked at Department for Transport full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

In general, a well organised department. Senior managers care about the staff a lot. Lots of good processes in place to ensure high quality work and staff are well looked after.

    Cons

Transport is quite a niche area of government policy, may not be everybody's cup of tea.

    Pros

Flexible working, Good amount of annual leave.

    Cons

The level of bureaucracy and red tape in unbelievable. The best example of this is the performance management system. This process takes at least a week to get through, it is such a waste of time and is essentially a paperwork exercise.

    Advice to Management

    Reduce bureaucracy
