    Pros

    - great committed people
    - interesting work
    - you feel that you are making a difference

    Cons

    - it feels that you need to spend enough time in the organisation to be recognised for your contributions; not a very motivating environment
    - innovation is not really valued
    - very hierarchical

I worked at Department for Work And Pensions as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly staff, good location and office facilities (policy library)

    Cons

Stultifying civil service culture and lack of execution know how/experience

    Advice to Management

Do detailed due diligence on senior hires - perm and contract. Backing the wrong pony at this level is catastrophic. The Civil Service does not know how to do 'change' and has a very poor track record - don't just engage change experts/consultants, listen to them.

good work life balance (including work from home arrangements), great team, project has great impact in British society.
Project is done in-house without consultancies sticking their noses.
Daily rate is one of the best you can find outside banking.
Commitment to Agile delivery to the highest level

    Cons

the technologies that are used are not the most exciting.
Possible issues with IR35 are likely after April 2017.

    Advice to Management

I worked at Department for Work And Pensions full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice work mates, pretty good working hours, benefits of working for a government department. Definitely not 20 words worth of pros. decent facilities, my offices had showers for cyclists, which was nice.

    Cons

Poor training, weak and lazy management, ridiculous working conditions - feels like being in prison, everything is timed even toilet breaks. I would not recommend working here.

    Advice to Management

Think more about the staff otherwise you'll never keep anyone. Anybody with ambition leaves after a few years because progression is almost non existent.

I worked at Department for Work And Pensions full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working with people both staff and customers. Opinions and ideas can be put forward and utilised so can have input in the running of the office. Flexi hours are an advantage

    Cons

Need to meet deadlines and fast paced at times.

    Advice to Management

Basically to listen to the workers who are actually doing the job to ascertain what works well and what doesn't

I worked at Department for Work And Pensions full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good employee benefits, the work in policy HQ can be very interesting, supportive of staff development.

    Cons

The staff reward system is opaque and really subject to internal politics. There is a scarily broad variation in the capabilities of staff: talent and ability varies from the tragi-comically bad to the awe-inspiring. But management are not confident to acknowledge this distinction, preferring to insist that all people of the same grade are equally suited to any task.

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look at your capability management system.
