    Pros

Great staff to work with! Both colleagues and mid-management.
Interesting and diverse array of projects offered, including the opportunity to change teams frequently, providing greater learning opportunities and diversity in your daily activities.
Great work/life balance due to the flexibility offered by the Department and particular teams.
Opportunities to work with other government departments and external stakeholders provide with good learning possibilities too.

    Cons

Too much bureaucracy! Projects get stalled all the time, particularly depending on the change of Ministers or upper management, and so much time and effort is wasted on projects that never kick in.
Lack of quality in some of their publications and analysis, particularly when compared to Academia.
Recent budgetary constraints have made the possibility of travel and training much more difficult than before.

    Advice to Management

Do not cut on the training budget

    Pros

Flexible time, Good Holiday entitlement + bank holidays.
Make great friends, became a great second family
Lots of training in the first 5 years.,

    Cons

Lack of face to faced training. E -Learning took over!!
Don't move job roles often enough, especially management.
Lower grades not listened to enough when managers want to change or increase your work load.
    Too many micro managers.
Not enough support to help you through to the next grade, especially when do end up doing it for 5 years on TDA

    Advice to Management

Listen to the lower grades who do their jobs , they are the ones who see the public not you - managers

    Pros

Buildup myself and try to do something best for my career and my family. As well as make strong my working knowledge and making strong myself to work with other people in different places

    Cons

Work in any place, we should take everything as a challenge to get success. Everyone should help each other to learn something and achieve something from others. When you work, ego shouldn't come over you .

    Advice to Management

    Give Value to your workers

I worked at Department for Work And Pensions part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Nothing really. Good employer at one time but that was a long time ago!!!

    Cons

Used to be a great organisation to work in. Now............................ promotion given to yes yes men/women who have no vision and care only for DWP ......... targets given on dealing with hardest to help groups............ praise given to those who go out of their way to stop benefits being paid...........employers who treat their employees badly are applauded - the more they employ the better, regardless, according to DWP..............I didn't receive a pay rise for about 8 years...............pensions drastically reduced - fair enough if for all but not!

    Advice to Management

More care towards staff. Look for potential in those who don't follow like sheep. Listen to the front line staff and take heed of what they say!

    Pros

Interesting work and the ability to move sideways as well as upwards if wanted. Some interesting people and varied roles available

    Cons

Old school mentality and ways of working petty squabbles between staff and management only changing when dragged kicking and screaming reluctance to own decisions and only concern is "what looks good" to others

    Advice to Management

Grow a pair ! Take ownership and be responsible for making decisions and Changes stop rewarding bad behaviours and negativity because staff are disruptive

I worked at Department for Work And Pensions full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Highly recommended if you are r good at fiddling statistics, flexi leave, sick leave and expenses.Integrity and hard work is not required.Focus is very much on reaching statistical targets and number crunching.Far less effort is put into acheiving the best result for the individual jobseeker. There is little scope for free thinking and innovation regarding working practices. There is little cohesion and consistency between the actions of lower management, with them interpreting staff rules and conditions as they deem fit for themselves.

    Cons

If you wish to avoid organisations without integrity this place is not for you

    Advice to Management

Needs a root and branch review to improve customer care qualities amongst staff

I have been working at Department for Work And Pensions part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Job satisfaction when sealing work for claimants
Readily informing claimants of their true rights and responsibilities

    Cons

Discrimination, bad management, brown nosing to get ahead yet never guaranteed, elitist attitude from management

    Advice to Management

Get a grip. Too concerned with achieving your own end of year results at the expense of those you manage
