    I have been working at Department of Immigration full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

    - Mostly good people doing important work - APS standard conditions - flex leave, annual leave, carers leave etc - Huge breadth of work in the portfolio

    Cons

    - A lot of dead wood at different levels (same as most government departments) - Very risk averse - Perpetual budget woes

    Conduct targeted redundancies

    I have been working at Department of Immigration full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

    It's permanent and pensionable,it enables one to exercise the law and gives alot of powers to the officers

    Cons

    Salary remuneration is wanting,no incentives,no bonuses,no appreciation of one's efforts,very ready to accuse of wrong doing

    Increase salaries,appreciate;training more,work rotation, so that one is all rounded

    Pros

    There is a huge variety of work, from operational border work, postings, compliance, visa decision making, refugee and humanitarian work to skilled and business visa work.

    Cons

    There is a 3 year running pay dispute, declining morale and increasing budget restrictions

    Usual APS benefits Diverse operating environments

    Cons

    Ex-Defence Boys club Processes, systems and equipment that are long overdue being revised/replaced No real creativity or innovation unless it directly responds to catching people perceived to be illegal

    Advice to Management

    While recognising that this is an APS department & therefore bound to respond to government policy and that the department has now merged and split with Border Force. There needs to be a concerted effort to improve the morale of staff and reduce the level of beureacratic interference in processes. Implement a clear process to permit business areas to obtain seed funding to develop early concepts that will benefit the...
