I worked at Department of Immigration and Citizenship

    Pros

Good pay; great benefits; very flexible with work/life balance.

    Cons

Most employees on temp contracts; unable to be promoted internally based on merit by site managers but must instead jump through govt hoops, write essays and compete against national and international candidates for the same job that you've evidenced you can perform.

    Advice to Management

    Rethink hiring process.

      Negative Outlook

I worked at Department of Immigration and Citizenship

      Pros

Looks like a great place with a lot of opportunities from the outside but looks are very deceiving!

      Cons

Dangerous toxic place to work, there are so many narcissistic types working here and the nepotism is rife. I personally knew of at least 12 others whom had suffered terrible bullying and harassment that is not only tolerated but accepted and condoned, especially bad if you are a woman working part-time with caring responsibilities.

      Advice to Management

Need to be aware of and resolve all of the systemic and cultural issues and start by having a more transparent and independent Values and Conduct Section and a more robust and professional WHS Section who truly support injured workers and don't just dodge Comcare bullets and pay lip service to the manipulative bullies and liars that are mostly promoted to the EL ranks.

      Neutral Outlook

I worked at Department of Immigration and Citizenship for more than 2 years

      Pros

Flexible working conditions, some interesting assignments, good location as it is close to a decent shopping mall. Colleagues were fun and had a sense of humour. Pay is OK.

      Cons

There always seemed to be lots of reasons not to do something, entrenched attitudes, reluctance to make decisions. Critical of new ideas.
