    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Supportive team leader and accesible top management for casual chats about career advancement.

Salaries are a bit low and there are no benefits apart from a great workplace.

    Advice to Management

Involve entry level positions into development programs to promote career advancement.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Department of Statistics New Zealand full-time

    Pros

Varied work, great opportunities, pay caught up with what it should be in the recent performance reviews. The flexible hours are amazing, as well as the true 40 hour work week.

    Cons

Some managers seem to be more suited to working as analysts, but there are very few senior analyst positions so most people have to work as managers to move up. A bit of a staff retention problem in certain teams.

    Advice to Management

I would recommend providing more pathways up in the organisation, and less focus on strategic direction in low level promotions - I know good workers who have left due to missing out on roles they were more than capable of filling.

I worked at Department of Statistics New Zealand part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Freedom to plan and organise your day, strong safety culture of avoiding households you are not comfortable visiting. Good pay for the job and driving paid for.

    Cons

Meeting unhappy people sometimes. Being sent back to the same household up to 6 or 7 times. No easy way to help people who are not on your workload but have questions too. Had to supply some items for Census delivery.

I have been working at Department of Statistics New Zealand full-time

    Pros

Interesting subject matter. Moderately family friendly. Nice gender mix. Good place to learn a bit about statistics, computing etc for early-career technical people.

    Cons

Many managers self-obsessed, over-confident, and out-of-touch. Organisation badly under-performing. OK communications from managers to staff, but virtually none in opposite direction. No viable career path for mid-level or senior-level technical people. Good technical people leave, and bad ones stay on forever. IT systems a total joke. A good place to work for technical people who are mediocre and have no ambitions.

    Advice to Management

Stop believing your own propaganda and take an honest look at how the organisation actually works. Get in some technical people who actually know what they are doing, and listen to them.
