I have been working at Dept of HHS Administration for Children and Families full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Professional development series at the White House in unparalleled in its intensiveness and in what you are able to learn in policy.

    Cons

Highly scrutinized portfolio that we all deal in unfortunately but it's good work that is so desperately needed by Americans people.

I have been working at Dept of HHS Administration for Children and Families full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great mission with staff committed to helping children and families

Incredible opportunity to contribute to national policy and programs

    Flexible telework options

    Cons

Bureaucracy everywhere and difficult to get things do, to change broken processes, and to improve over the status quo

Some mid-level management not open to new ideas or change

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and give them the support to improve the work, and not just maintain it

Former Employee - Summer Intern in Washington, DC

    Pros

I worked as a summer intern in 2008 and the pay was definitely the best part of the job. With almost no work experience, I started off at $12/hr.

    Cons

There was almost always nothing to do. Most of my time was spent trying to look busy and when I was actually given work, it was just busy work.

    Advice to Management

Make sure there is always something for the interns to do.
