For a brief period, it was one of the best places to work in beauty

Pros

For a brief period under former ceo's Abhijit & then Cathy, it was a good place to work and a great turnaround story. They had built a phenomenal culture and helped build dermstore into a marketing powerhouse. Revenue doubled, teams grew, top talent was groomed, and there was a clear direction.

Cons

Theres been a slow hammeroage of talent since last year. The president and vp of marketing left last year, the new vp of marketing lasted 6 months. Lots of managers (the doers) are gone across all teams. Direction is unclear and the momentum is eroding.

Lowest Morale I've Ever Seen

Pros

Free beauty products and a great employee discount. Good work-life balance. 401K matching.

Cons

The culture has changed a lot since the current president has joined, which has destroyed morale and caused a number of employees to leave. Excluding customer service, the business was run by about 60 people and at least 12 employees have left in the last 3 months. The latest departure is the VP of Marketing, who only stayed for a few months before returning to her previous company. The company structure has become very top-heavy, with 5 VPs and a dozen more Directors. Most of the decision-making has moved from the people doing the work to the President's inner circle. Thus, directions are passed downward without much communication, leaving most of the company out of the loop. Additionally, because the President mainly listens to just her VPs, she receives a limited view on what's actually happening at the company.

Terrible Leadership | No Strategy | Awful Culture

Pros

- generous discount on amazing skincare products - flexible working hours (dependent upon department) - good benefits (i.e. medical, dental, 401k) - snacks/beer tap

Cons

After 19 years you would think this company would be killing it in the industry and be a recognizable brand, but it's terrible leadership has contributed to it's sub par existence. In the 3 years I worked at Dermstore, I saw 4 President's pass through. That's a telltale sign something is very wrong with this place. The current leadership is a joke, they have no clue what they are doing, there is no clear strategy that makes sense, and the President stands only as a puppet while the puppeteers (executive leaders) dictate the direction and movement of the company. People in senior level positions are the only one's getting promoted. This company is more top heavy with Directors than I've ever seen at any other company I've worked for. Most are unqualified for their positions and are terrible managers. There is absolutely no room for growth here or any learning opportunities that will help build your skillset. Dermstore is known to foster a culture of favoritism and entitlement: if you aren't on the list, you won't ever be seen, recognized or valued. The pay here is ridiculous... its below the average for L.A. There are too many cancers spreading through the office to create a healthy culture and work environment. There is no collaboration or clear communication between teams, everyone is out for themselves. The turnover rate is at the highest its ever been. Overall, it's not a healthy place to work.
