I worked at DermStore full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Some great, talented yet undervalued employees.

    Cons

Fosters a culture of Mean Girls one steroids. Obvious bullying and cliqueness. Never have seen such a toxic environment in my entire working career. Talented employees undervalued. Very high turnover rate. Constant management changes. People promoted only through nepotism and favoritism. If you’re not drinking the koolaid, you’re on the outcast list. Directors/managers openly pick favorites and feed these suckups with...

    Advice to Management

Re-evaluate the company structure and why you’re constantly failing at the same areas. Branding, image, name recognition are all lacking with beauty customers for a reason. This is a huge industry and you guys should be booming. Maybe take a closer look at the execs. It was pretty obvious to the rest of us little people that that’s where the problems lay. Management classes could really come in handy with teaching leaders...

    I worked at DermStore full-time

    Pros

Culture was fun most of the time.

    Cons

People are hired based on how well they are liked versus what they can actually do. Pay is not on par.

    Advice to Management

Find qualified managers that encourage and want their team to succeed.

"Wonderful small company with a startup feel.. then a big corporation took over and ruined everything."

      I worked at DermStore

      Pros

Nice team dynamics with very little drama and some excellent and knowledgeable talent at all levels. Everyone worked together well and the management worked hard to foster a positive work environment despite the restrictions imposed by Target when they took over. Working at Dermstore was a great feather in your cap if you're looking to pursue a career in e-Commerce or e-Beauty. Lots of people have left since Target...

      Cons

Lack of direction and pressure from the parent company made for a lot of mistakes that got blamed on the little people. But the executives and directors got hit too, lots of scapegoating going on. They're on their 5th CEO in 4 years, that says a lot. It seems they are under so much pressure to turn a higher profit than they are it's become a blood-from-a-stone situation and if my LinkedIn feed is any indication, quite...

      Advice to Management

Shouldn't have done what you did, but now it's too late. Corp's barely keeping their head above water, closing stores nationwide and they're going to start laying off your employees or sell you off just to keep themselves solvent. But don't feel bad, it's just.. company policy, right?

      Positive Outlook

I have been working at DermStore full-time for less than a year

      Pros

      - Team environment is very upbeat - Excellent benefits package including gym membership - Cool company parties and happy hour - Really nice, spacious office - New leader is smart with a clear vision for the company - Company fuses two things that are on fire right now: tech and beauty

      Cons

      - Mediocrity still exists. There are some people who just don't care and are just there to collect a paycheck - Occasional communication gaps between teams - I agree with the previous review saying that there are a lot of remote employees that don't seem accountable - Pay could be better - Traffic (but hey, it's LA!)

      Advice to Management

      - Continue to listen to the staff - Strengthen career development initiatives - More communication regarding where the company is going

I have been working at DermStore full-time for more than a year

      Pros

After months of ups and downs, Dermstore now has new leadership and a renewed company vision that I feel will make it even better and a great place to work in. In the few years I've been with Dermstore, it provides an interesting balance of energy and dynamic pace of a startup and the solid structure that Target provides (Dermstore is a subsidiary of Target). I have to say the main Pros of working at Dermstore are:...

      Cons

I feel the negative aspects of Dermstore were more pronounced when it was under a different leadership. The current President seems very focused and is determined to lead the team to succeed.

      Advice to Management

Stay focused and invest in team development and employee satisfaction and engagement. Too many people work remotely and seem nonproductive in their work or seem disconnected with their teams. Pay attention to innovating the website and customer service experience.

I have been working at DermStore

      Pros

The company has gone through several changes ever since it was acquired by Target. It was off to a rough start but it looks like things are starting to shape up. - Managers care about your career and wellbeing. They train you and schedule weekly or monthly facetime with you to make sure you're happy and on track with your career goals. - Flexible working environment, you can work from home if you want/need to--a...

      Cons

      - Turnover was high for the first 2 years (although the people who replaced them turned out so much better) - Consists of small teams juggling multiple projects at the same time. Could use more staff. - Desks are too close to each other, you can hear everyone. Nice for collaboration but not for someone who likes peace and quiet
