      Lost perspective, blinded eye

Nov 11, 2020 - Manager in Phoenix, AZ

      Pros

People I have built friendships with

      Cons

CEO has no perspective of the failures of departments within the organization. We are not allowed to share major challenges and failures for fear of firing. There is no help, coaching, guidance, praise or professionalism by Regional Directors or senior management. Meetings last 10 minutes at the most and they are so unprofessional and lack any depth or communication of what the credit union is doing. Want us to read books and listen to pod casts in the absence of them being true leaders and leading their management teams.

      Desert Financial Credit Union Response

      Communications Specialist

Thank you for sharing this feedback. We never want any team members, regardless of position, to feel that they are kept from sharing their challenges and getting the guidance and help they need to overcome those challenges. We can assure you that communicating about failures and challenges will not result in termination. Senior Leadership, along with CEO Jeff Meshey, have made it a priority to have open communication between all leaders, which is why there are regular meetings with all leaders, and an employee communication app has been created. We have shared your feedback with the leaders mentioned to ensure they are doing all they can to communicate with their teams. We appreciate your advice to management to better understand each team and their challenges. It is something that leaders will continue to work on. When it comes to sales goals, we realize that each role has unique demands and we try to provide resources to help each individual thrive. If you have more ideas on how to help employees succeed in sales roles, please feel free to send suggestions to wecare@desertfinancial.com. Thank you!

      Constant battle with newer technology

      Pros

The pay is ok but on the low side for technology. Flexible hours working around projects or task and personal life. So many nice folks to work with.

      Cons

Several years back they stopped being a credit union and became more like a bank. The atmosphere is competing with other national big banks out there. You never hear them compare us to other credit unions in the state. Well except for Navy Federal credit union and USAA are now here in AZ and on the managements radar. Over half the technology used is over a decade old. People refuse to change to newer technologies, the famous line is "we have always done it this way" which seems to be the motto. Several years ago the core banking system was changed but then modified to act like the system they replaced. Updates to the new system now takes weeks to implement because of how heavily the modifications were made. Senior management is large and has been there for a long time. No one moves up without someone retiring or dieing.

      Insane!!

      Pros

Good benefits and hours worked with family. Met some great friends while working there.

      Cons

This is a credit union and I think Senior Management forgets that. They tried to compete with banks all the time. Change is good for the better not because some other bank is doing it. That would be the wrong reason to change everything. Promote within you have great hard working employees that would not be so unhappy if you trained and promoted employees. So much money/time is wasted with redundancy. Hire your managers on character and abilities not on familiarity and loudness in your face people who can put up a show.
