I have been working at Detroit Zoological Society for less than a year

    Pros

Good hours, make lots of friends, be around alot of people, good supervisors.

    Cons

Some employees don't do their work, horrible managers that don't want to be managers so they treat employees bad

    Advice to Management

Make sure when managers are hired they actually want the job. And don't let employees get away with everything get rid of the bad employees asap

I have been working at Detroit Zoological Society full-time

    Pros

The people are great! The Zoo's animal welfare mission and conservation efforts are amazing! This is a fun place to work. Great benefits and PTO earnings.

    Cons

Only closed 3 days out of the year. Work a lot of weekends and holidays. Earn a lot of PTO but difficult to take time off with limited full-time staff and busy seasons.

I worked at Detroit Zoological Society

    Pros

    could be fun at times

    Cons

summer heat; poor management decisions regarding assigning of people to tasks

    Advice to Management

Be smart about who is assigned to which task. For example, the stroller rental is hard on the body. Rather than automatically assigning it to women, consider that a man may be better for the job if he is stronger in the upper body.

I have been working at Detroit Zoological Society part-time for less than a year

    Pros

-Atmosphere (the zoo itself) -Flexibility (management successfully works around other obligations) -Teamwork -Perks -Uniform provided -"Open-door" policy -Plenty of exercise (post are either walked or a bicycle is used)

    Cons

-Pay (less than $10 per hour) -Must work holidays (except Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years) -Hours are sporadic and sometimes erratic (can be randomly scheduled to work 10-13 hour shifts without day of recuperation) -Generally looks to hire in the older demographic -Poorly managed -Too much micro-managing among peers -No growth (part-time seasonal, part-time, full-time, supervisor) -Can tell that... department isn't necessarily a priority by organization (tons of outdated material and equipment) -Mostly outdoor environment

    Advice to Management

The amount of money being paid to the officers is a little disheartening and disrespectful for the duties performed and title held; the topic should definitely be renegotiated.

I worked at Detroit Zoological Society

    Pros

The pay was pretty good ($10.50 per hour), my coworkers were nice, you get to feed some animal, and discounts on events.

    Cons

The management sucks! Be prepared for people to talk to you very rude and talked down to. Standing for long periods of time not knowing when you'll get a break (when the zoo is busy) and the pressures of working a commission position (it's not a commission position but if you do no do well you can/will get demoted).

    Advice to Management

Treat you employees like you want to be treated.

I worked at Detroit Zoological Society full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There is a clearly defined mission supporting animal welfare and environmental issues and almost all employees are there to support it. Staff are generally friendly.

    Cons

For an organizantion that is clearly a leader in a animal welfare and humane treatment of all living things, its treatment of the human element falls short. There is disparity in salaries across disciplines, and more importantly different treatment of staff. Behaviors that are acceptable for some are cause for discipline or termination for others, often with a lack of compassion and goodwill.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Detroit Zoological Society full-time for more than a year

    Pros

When you become an employee, you see a new side to the zoo. You learn about the animals and all of the strides the zoo is making for both captive and wild animals. The training is sound an very effective, they make it clear that they want you to succeed and be safe in your work. There is a great amount of continuity from their mission statement and core values as it applies to everyday tasks.

    Cons

There is a serious lack of interdepartmental communications for day to day operations. This results in wrong information being shared and guest becoming frustrated, which takes a toll on sales and staff morale. Full-time year-round staff seem a bit "high and mighty" around the seasonal staff members.

    Advice to Management

I would love it if inter-departmental relations and communications improved. There were several instances of communication lapses that directly affected my work.
