I worked at Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people you work with from your coworkers in IT to the users you support on a daily basis are generally pleasant and nice to work with. The benefits package is also actually really good in comparison to most other for-profit employers. My supervisor (and from my understanding supervisors organization wide) are generally fairly flexible with your scheduling and work-life balance needs.

    Cons

The big downside to working on the IT end of things at Devereux is that it's non-profit, so the pay is low and you are generally working with a shoe-string budget. There also aren't a lot of opportunities for advancement in the IT end of things (generally one opening a year if you're lucky); and, those openings that do come up at national HQ general go to favorites regardless of qualifications. Please note that, despite this, I am still giving a 5 star rating because the work environment really is that great.

    Advice to Management

Don't make it so blatantly obvious that you're playing favorites for the remarkably scarce advancement opportunities in IT. Also, understand that in order to bring the company into the 21st century, you actually have to treat IT like a priority in budgeting and not your least favorite stepchild. Encourage your people in IT to grow and develop, which will lead to higher turnover, but that higher turnover will also help bring in fresh talent.
