I worked at Devon Energy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great place to work. Amazing pay and outrageous 401k match. 9/80 work schedule, so you get every other Friday off on top of a generous PTO package. Interesting work and great people to work with.

    Cons

    Careers sometimes develop slow.
Devon had to lay off 20% of their workforce in 2016 due to low oil prices.

    Advice to Management

You're in the commodity business, so keep your costs low.

I worked at Devon Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary and benefits are (or at least were) top-notch. Salary + annual cash bonus + restricted stock (vests 25% every 4 years) + 401k w/ matching 6% + an additional 401k contribution paid 100% by the company each spring, and calculated as a % of your previous years' base salary + cash bonus, with the % based on your number of years of service (all 100% vested upon payment). Also has great health insurance, life insurance (3x base paid by company with option to buy additional coverage), vacation up to 5 or 6 weeks, and a 9/80 schedule (every other Friday off).

    Cons

Not any major cons. It should be difficult to get promoted, but it seemed to be harder here than at other places of similar type and size. Also, there is the issue of pretty much one option as to workplace location, that being at the Oklahoma City HQ office. But good comp + low cost of living takes the sting out of that for those not partial to living there.

    Advice to Management

None. Devon has always been a well managed company. Larry Nichols was one of the best managers/CEO that nobody's heard of (outside of the industry and OKC of course), but the company has continued to be thrive since Larry stepped down from the CEO position (and now since retired). Even in this latest industry downturn, Devon is as well positioned as any domestic E&P for when commodity prices improve.

I worked at Devon Energy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great work environment, family oriented management, health care was amazing, very satisfied with salary and other perks.

    Cons

I personally didn't encounter many. I wish they would have stayed in Houston.

    Advice to Management

Take good care of your employees in OKC. I've heard that management is not the same as previous years. There is more red tape.

I have been working at Devon Energy (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great work environment, benefits, and work/life balance with an alternate work schedule available (9/80 schedule getting every other Friday off).

    Cons

Current market is forcing layoffs and office closures. Many desiring to make Devon their first and last firm to have a career with are now looking to change industries, but that is due to the market and not unique to Devon alone.

I have been working at Devon Energy full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Job Autonomy, great leadership, office amenities, excellent benefits from dieticians and office gyms to hefty retirement contributions. Excellent balance sheet and known for less layoffs.

    Cons

Slow to implement change, too many supervisor or leadership roles- it creates confusion when making decisions. A lot of decisions are made in the corporate office for the field and not properly communicated.

    Advice to Management

More clear and effective communication and direct visits to the field.

    Pros

Believed in training their employees, management always seemed to be fair.

    Cons

Closed Houston office. Oklahoma City too far away. Some departments spent too much time reorganizing.

    Advice to Management

Take care of the employees you have. Make sure there is a work / life balance.

I worked at Devon Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This is good company to work for. I worked there five and a half years. Like the other oil and gas companies, they provide good benefits for their employees. In addition, you'll find good people there to work with and work for.

    Cons

There is not much bad to say. It is a large corporation and as a large corporation, they may have to make business decisions that a given person may not like. For example, there are times in the oil business when you have to exit business in one part of the country and grow business in another part of the country. This always effects jobs, but the company trys to take care of the employees that can not relocate.

    Advice to Management

Thanks for hiring good people and remembering to take care of them as people. Thanks for five good years. I'd do it again if I could.
