I worked at Devon Energy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great place to work. Amazing pay and outrageous 401k match. 9/80 work schedule, so you get every other Friday off on top of a generous PTO package. Interesting work and great people to work with.

    Cons

    Careers sometimes develop slow.
Devon had to lay off 20% of their workforce in 2016 due to low oil prices.

    Advice to Management

You're in the commodity business, so keep your costs low.

I worked at Devon Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary and benefits are (or at least were) top-notch. Salary + annual cash bonus + restricted stock (vests 25% every 4 years) + 401k w/ matching 6% + an additional 401k contribution paid 100% by the company each spring, and calculated as a % of your previous years' base salary + cash bonus, with the % based on your number of years of service (all 100% vested upon payment). Also has great health insurance, life insurance (3x base paid by company with option to buy additional coverage), vacation up to 5 or 6 weeks, and a 9/80 schedule (every other Friday off).

    Cons

Not any major cons. It should be difficult to get promoted, but it seemed to be harder here than at other places of similar type and size. Also, there is the issue of pretty much one option as to workplace location, that being at the Oklahoma City HQ office. But good comp + low cost of living takes the sting out of that for those not partial to living there.

    Advice to Management

None. Devon has always been a well managed company. Larry Nichols was one of the best managers/CEO that nobody's heard of (outside of the industry and OKC of course), but the company has continued to be thrive since Larry stepped down from the CEO position (and now since retired). Even in this latest industry downturn, Devon is as well positioned as any domestic E&P for when commodity prices improve.

I worked at Devon Energy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Corporate culture - Integrity is primary, and it shows.
Hi tech innovations - this is an expensive industry, and Devon doesn't shy away from spending the R&D money that it takes to be cutting edge.
Pay, benefits, atmosphere, all well above average.

    Cons

Cyclical energy caused the latest reduction in force, and I was a casualty. But I knew this going in.

    Advice to Management

When looking to hire after the upswing, look to your former (good) RIF employees!
