    I worked at Dick Smith for less than a year

    Pros

    A lot of responsibility can be given to you if you are willing to work hard; Excellent way to get sales experience; generous staff discount; amazing people to work with

    Cons

    It's closing very soon; commission structure is stupid and requires a particular percentage of warranties per month of you get paid all or nothing (on top of hourly rate)

    Advice to Management

    Don't turn a classic brand into a liquidating business by abandoning your customers by not keeping them at the center of your business decisions.

      Pros

      D. Smith was a nice place to work at years ago. Thanks to bad management, it is only a memory now. But I can say, most of the people that I have worked with in stores were amazing people.

      Cons

      Many head office managers were very egoistic without any skills to back it up. They would either look down or not even say hi to my staff when they walked in to the stores because probably they thought they were so much better. At times, when we warned managers from head office about the decisions they make, they would not listen and try to micro manage all the managers in stores. Salary was not competitive.

      Advice to Management

      It is too late for any advice but even when we did they never listened. I just wanna say goodbye to the management although they do not manage anymore anyways!!

      One of the best things about my job is the people I work with. It has been one of the only jobs where I leave a shift feeling better than I did when I entered. As well as the workers, many of the customers are really pleasant and nice to talk to.       At this current time, it is getting harder and harder to sell products as we are mostly out of stock. As well as stock levels, the customers can sometimes be a hassle. The ones that don't treat you like a person always bring down a good mood. The ones where you say hello to them, but they just want to know the price of an item and then leave it on the counter without saying good bye if they aren't happy. They really grind...

      It would be really beneficial for the company if the stores got a more modern take with their internals. All of the stores I have been to and or worked at, have had very dull and cold lighting, which when bouncing off the metal shelves and old displays, makes the stores look very harsh and uninviting.       Pros

      I worked with great people which made it bearable.

      Cons

      Not much staff incentives to do well. Very little time invested in staff to coach and improve sales. Management was continuously changing which is a testament to how their head office works. Their current situation is of no surprise to me.

      Advice to Management

      Treat your employees well and they will work harder for you. If employees are in a happy working environment then I guarantee you, overall performance will improve.

      Good discounts, some managers i had were great, good people to work with, very flexible hours while at uni.

      Cons

      Sales targets are way to high, commission is pretty much impossible to get because they ask for you to make sales, warranties, sales per hour, and 2 vodafone connections. Seeing that most dicksmith stores are in shopping centres, vodafone stores are always around so it makes it very hard to even get people interested. manager pushes you to make targets daily even when you work late or early shifts, signing every customer...
