I worked at Dierbergs Markets part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

-Not as many trashy customers like Walmart.
-Requesting off for vacations are simple.
-Health insurance and a 401k plan are provided to employees

    Cons

    -Management picks favorites.
    -The union is useless.
-The store director Chris treats the managers and employees like they are dirt, and has turned the atmosphere of Dierbergs into another Walmart.
    - Limited hours starting off
-Transferring to another store eliminates your seniority even for management.
-Managers are mostly hired from within.
-Managers bend the rules for customers all the time.
-High Turn Over Rate; Especially in the Deli
-Management won't support you if a customer is abusive towards you
-Management takes only customer complaints seriously and not employees concerns.
-The Company does not match your 401k.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating employees like they are a pile of filth. We are humans too. This company used to be great to work for. Now it is just a sinking ship that everyone wants to run from. The Dierbergs family should be humble and give back to their hard working employees; they shouldn't, however, spend millions of dollars on the stupid mansions that were constructed for their own pleasure.

    Pros

Steady pay, if you work hard you'll find you get all the hours you need.

    Cons

They are losing market share, small minded corporate management. They do not value education. Top executives (now a category manager) used to talk nothing but bad things about the company even while being a store director. He would even brag about how stupid the top executives were for buying his bull.

    Advice to Management

Your at the helm of a sinking ship. Your losing market share, item counts are down, customers perceptions are your over priced. salaries are stagnant, benefits are reduced. 30 years ago there was a future, but today I'd advise everyone to steer away! Dierbergs is the next blockbuster.

    Pros

Co-workers are reliable and hard working.
Getting transferred into a position within another department of the store was very easy.

    Cons

The amount of hours you work are sometimes inconsistent. You may work 30+ hours one week and around 20 the next.

I have been working at Dierbergs Markets full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great part time jobs. Good for retired people and first time employees. Great Benefits. Some of the stores provide great customer service.

    Cons

Promoting too many young people under 30 years of age and not promoting enough older more experienced people to operate the stores.

    Advice to Management

Watch for Age Discrimination. Too many older and more experienced people are being ignored and not getting promoted. The wages need to be reviewed and balanced out. Many of the positions are paid based on old union plans and are over paid for what they do now.

I worked at Dierbergs Markets part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Compassionate and caring environments.
    - Opportunity to make a difference in the community. You will be the approachable face of a confusing and often intimidating health care system, even on bad days you leave feeling like you've really helped. There is a level of job satisfaction in that that is hard to match.
    - Nearly all Pharmacists I met here were funny warm people with kind senses of humor.
    - Staff pharmacists care and worry over their regular patients and it is good to see that from an inside vantage point.
    - Very organized environment.
    - This is a fairly stable career choice and management is very willing to work with you to make it a comfortable situation.
    - Professional atmosphere.
    - Almost no heavy lifting is required for this job.
    - Very rarely boring.
    - You get a snazzy jacket. ;)

    Cons

    - The hours can be long on your feet, breaks inconsistent or nonexistent, and the job can get very stressful and attention demanding.
    - Another thing I noticed is that while the Pharmacist on duty is the ultimate authority over the Pharmacy Department (behind the counter), as it is against regulations for non-registered pharmacy staff to enter the Pharmacy without constant supervision, sometimes store directors or other department managers who are not registered with the Board of Pharmacy ignore this and do not like to be corrected; even though it leaves a store open to audit or worse. This reduces productivity as the lowest ranking pharmacy staff member, usually the one also designated to wait on patients, is the designated "watcher" in these situations.

    Advice to Management

Retail pharmacy is a distinctly different, and currently changing, world from a strictly retail business model. As a department that provides a valuable community health service it is sometimes inappropriate, or even illegal, to apply certain store policies to pharmacy transactions. It is about the health and safety of the patients, and that is not something a store director (not trained in medicine or HIPAA compliance) should be attempting to dictate or regulate. Educating all employees with a broad overview of the functions and restrictions of other departments would help resolve this issue.

    Pros

Friendly work environment and flexible hours. Room for growth within the company. Multiple locations to choose from. Great benefits offered to those who qualify for them.

    Cons

Pay isn't the greatest but it suffices for me at least (a student). Hard to get raises depending on your department.

    Advice to Management

    Consider merit-based raises.

    Pros

The pros would be getting to know and meet a lot of new people. I met a lot of m friends by working here which was great.

    Cons

The management is rough and doesnt seem to care very much about you. The company is so unorganized in a lot of ways as well.

    Advice to Management

My advice is to better take care of your employees. Stop treating adults like children as well. It is a shame to work in a place where your'e not respected.
