I worked at Dietrich Metal Framing full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Back 15 yrs ago the company was run differently. The benefits were good and free to the employees, steak lunches for safety goal success. Good opportunities for advancement, decent pay, capital for expansion. The plants tried to keep up with modern technology and make improvements. Good safety program, and OSHA "awareness"

    Cons

The latter years the pay could be better for supervisors and managers, layoffs and plant closures... parent company sold out to MISO! Some plants had "young" managers that didn't have the experience to lead! Since the merger the company went backwards from what Dietrich was. TOO much FLUFF! TRANSFORMATION! BAH!

    Advice to Management

Less FLUFF!!! more realistic expectations and actually do what you commit to!

    Pros

The benefits pakage is outstanding. They have locations nationwide which makes it easy for those interested and/or willing to relocate. The industry is, at times, fun and many of the customers are very down to earth and easy to talk to.

    Cons

Senior level management lacks any forward thinking and has no vision beyond maintaining their own employment. An ever changing bonus "program" is impossible to understand and even more difficult to take advantage of. The company is completely bloated with unnecessary departments and overhead, which is why the company is incapable of comepting with leaner operating competitors. Bending steel shouldn't be this difficult. Problem and/or under performing employess are either promoted or transferred to other facilities rather than being properly trained or otherwise dealt with.

    Advice to Management

The industry has changed, yet the company still operates as it did 20 years ago. There are many more options available to your customer base than their used to be. Stop telling your customers how to run their businesses and stop relying on your past greatness.

    Pros

Clean plant environment. Management at local level is very knowledgeable and competent.

    Cons

Upper management keeps everyone in the dark. They lack respect for their employees. They never have timely information or even the proper knowledge to give to employees about the state of business.

    Advice to Management

Gather more information and knowledge before making major decisions. Be more prepared when major decisions are made.

    Pros

The company provides good benefits and usually stable employment even during down cyclical times.

    Cons

Poor management candidates. Popularity played large part in promotions rather than the competence of the candidate. Pay is low compared to the industry average. Not a progressive company regarding change. Seem to lose good people to other companies either based upon a lack of pay or recognition by the company.

    Advice to Management

Give accurate feedback to employees where they stand with the company and how they fit with future plans. Give a clear career path and develop your team with better training and sharing of ideas. Share best practices.
