"Dillard's has far more opportunity to grow than other retail companies. You get what you put into it."

I worked at Dillard's full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pay is better than most other stores in the industry. Promotions are attainable. Someone who is coachable and flexible can go far.

    Cons

Sales goals can be hard to reach, especially in commission based positions. Not necessarily a con but you must present yourself well and stay on trend.

    Advice to Management

Pursue modern forms of advertising and community outreach.

I have been working at Dillard's full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The discount and Benefits are great

    Cons

Some of the Management above you know nothing about how Dillards is run, I was told there is not a training process. When I transferred to a new region they had a company training standard and were surprised I hadn't been through it.

    Advice to Management

    Get it together

I have been working at Dillard's full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The only pro is a paycheck once a week

    Cons

There is ZERO work life balance, they will disrespect you left and right. Your days off will constantly be changed, working 10-12 days in a row is the norm. If you call out upper management will give you dirty looks and make you feel guilty so people show up to work sick and they don't care. I got threatened with termination and written up because I missed work on a day we had a corporate visit even though I was in the...

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees better, like you actually care about them. We have personal lives, too. Your "mission statement" is "the best customer care anywhere" and nothing the company does backs that up. DO NOT OVERWORK YOUR STAFF, I can't even believe I have to say this but: MORE HOURS WORKED DOES NOT EQUAL PRODUCTIVITY, i'll say it again...MORE HOURS WORKED DOES NOT EQUAL PRODUCTIVITY. Working your managers and associates...

I have been working at Dillard's full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Helping customers get the best quality in merchandise and the best customer service. Also having a great sales team.

    Cons

Associates can not have 2 days off together. And weekends off are rare. The schedules change at the last minute. This is not a job for single parents of young children.

    Advice to Management

To keep customers happy, you must have a happy staff. Once the associates are tired, drained, and over work it cause issues with their performance on the sales floor. The associates have family’s as well as the customers. This is not a family oriented company.

I worked at Dillard's full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Pretty good pay compared to others

    Cons

Everything. The benefits are terrible, the hours are brutal, the company does not care about their employees. The work load is ridiculous,. Do not work there, do not shop there. I also worked at the Port Arthur, TX location, it is not any better. It is the culture that they have created, it's a terrible place to work, or try to have a career.

    Advice to Management

Take a lesson from Chick-fil-a or other stores that actually try to create a good work environment.

I worked at Dillard's full-time for less than a year

    Pros

You have uncapped potential on salary as a salesperson. It really just depends on your selling ability. The discount is nice since they sell just about everything. A couple times a year you can enjoy a double discount, to use on items for work (wardrobe, shoes, cosmetics) which is generous and helpful when you want to keep up on trends. As a manager, you have some freedom with your schedule ( I’m sure depending on your...

    Cons

There is no accountability for those that produce. Management is left to deal with unruly, rude, entitled associates simply because they sell more than their peers. Some are known to steal product, yet it is ignored because of their numbers at the register. It is unfortunate really, because it does not motivate others to follow in their path and be top producers. Most at the top are highly disliked within the store by...

    Advice to Management

Don’t hold a few above the rest. Take the time to coach and train the people who want to raise the bar for themselves and the team. Don’t turn a blind eye to the issues... you are alienating your most passionate team members. You say you are the best, walk the walk.

I worked at Dillard's full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Your peers and associates are amazing. Discounts on merchandise within the store.

    Cons

Extremely micro managed from store manager Didn’t have the all the resources necessary for all the projects the store manager wanted things done Days leading up to a district visit put everyone on edge

    Advice to Management

Be fair and show respect to all your associates, they are the ones that sacrifice the most. Don’t stay in your office all day on your throne.

I worked at Dillard's full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Pays well Prefers to promote from within

    Cons

Everything. This is a backwards company. I left with good standing after 6 years for personal reasons and they still didn’t pay out my vacation. The turnover rate is so high you never feel like you can get above water. Upper management is always aggressively demanding and high pressure for sales and gives little training. For new employees it’s a three day on boarding and then your sent to the sales floor with a review...

    Advice to Management

You can’t keep good people if you don’t care about them. There has to be some give and take with schedule request or personal outside of work needs. Don’t call managers in on their day off for starters
