I have been working at Dimensional Fund Advisors full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The talent pool at the at the firm is some of the deepest in the industry. Over half of the portfolio managers have extensive backgrounds in engineering. All of the PMs have MBAs from top 10 schools.

    Cons

Due to Dimensional's philosophy about markets, the Portfolio Management job is much more oriented towards day to day operational tasks than at a typical active shop. It is much more akin to the environment at Vanguard.

    Advice to Management

Faster promotions? It's difficult since the talent pool is so strong. Only the best of the best can rise up quickly.

I worked at Dimensional Fund Advisors full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good pay for the area (Austin). Intelligent people. Good cafeteria. Great work/life balance in most departments. Work here if you want mundane relatively easy work. Not much thought or innovation going on, so it is easy to get complacent.

    Cons

Poor leadership. Not a meritocracy. Very easy for people to put on a facade and pretend to help while prioritizing their own interests. Not quite as bad as wall street, but some people are trying. Hiring intelligent people to do menial tasks and then hiring externally rather than promoting from within -- not a good recipe for success.

    Advice to Management

Be better leaders. No transparency from leadership and very poor middle management. Middle managers are mostly lost.

I worked at Dimensional Fund Advisors full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Easy to advance if you try to make the right alliances. Beautiful building, close to downtown.

    Cons

Human Resources the absolute worst. The management, if you can even call it that, care about putting more money in their already fat, wall street pockets. They will find any excuse to not give you full bonuses and are the most difficult to work with in almost all situations. They're reputations precede them as no one wants to work with them or for them (2 in particular).

    Advice to Management

Clean house and get rid of those running that department. You'll find an instant climate change if that happens. Until then, continue to lose great people.

I have been working at Dimensional Fund Advisors full-time

    Pros

Amazing benefits. Generous PTO. Great 401K plan. Friendly and collaborative environment. Free drinks and fruits. Best possible location, across the street from the ocean.

    Cons

Not much upward mobility. Could get the sense that you are "stuck" in your position. Management is backed off a little too much at times.

I have been working at Dimensional Fund Advisors full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I have worked at Dimensional for many years and feel very fortunate for the opportunity to work for a company that is a beacon for honesty and integrity in an industry that is often painted as anything but. It is a company that holds the client above all else, which is also an explanation for some of the less than stellar employee reviews. The best ideas are welcome, but you have to be prepared to recognize that many...

    Cons

The expectations are high. You do not advance far unless you are truly exceptional. Dimensional is a meritocracy where your career path is determined by the value you bring.

    Advice to Management

Decisions are made in a very logical fashion. Don't be afraid to share that logic with the broad employee base.

I worked at Dimensional Fund Advisors full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Location, tons of funding for projects.

    Cons

Penny pinching for employees, CEO acts like a tyrant. Average tenure of 80% of the employees is less than 3 years.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees like people instead of assets.

    Pros

Friendly, interested in retention, great perqs, growing firm, generous job scope

    Cons

Slow-paced, every decision requires multiple disparate managers to approve, accountability can be murky, highly police personality of women workers
