It seems partners are much more flexible with associates who have kids than with those who don’t. If it’s okay for my colleague with a kid to leave at 5 pm and log on later, why isn’t that the same for me (no kids)? My obligations might be different, but I still have a life and want to be able to do certain things, like catch that evening workout class or cook dinner for my partner. As you can probably tell, my firm is operating 100% in person. There is no point here — I’m just whining.

Hands off. Let you do your thing.

      Cons

For a big firm, office space is dumpy.

      Pros

Market wagon delivers to the office, that’s it.

      Cons

The high turnover rate for their docketing department was a warning I should have heeded. This place is severely micromanaged with a shut up and put up type of attitude. If having to join a clique in order to survive is your type of thing this may be the place for you. If you’re wanting a warm, welcoming environment look elsewhere. Also, do not take their “anonymous” satisfaction survey. They’re not interested in receiving any constructive feedback.

      Pros

The pay is decent and the environment is welcoming depending on the department you are in. Large firm with lots of resources. Managing Partner is super friendly.

      Cons

limited work life balance, paying over $200 a month for parking, some attorneys think they are gods gift to earth and treat staff like scum.

      Pros

Competitive pay. Expensive but comprehensive insurance. Unlimited sick time.

      Cons

A two-tier system that is perpetuated between attorneys and staff. Partners are demi-gods and should be treated as such while staff are at the leisure of office politics. Office politics rules all. If you are not willing to snitch, make-up stories, gossip, and backstab you will not last long. Management does not appreciate improvement unless they are able to take full credit. If your supervisor messes up it will roll downhill, without fail.

Great people. Okay pay but still below market for similarly situated firms and terrible benefits.

      Cons

Health insurance is terrible for Illinois residents; no 401(k) contribution.

      Unprofessional communications

      Pros

They allowed associates to dress in jeans/khakis.

      Cons

Firm neglected to reply to multiple communications between first and second summer employment. Said I rejected the offer, which never occurred (still have the correspondence). Refused to provide a legitimate answer as to why employment was not offered. Finally, they cited grades (Got a B- in my second year due to COVID during finals) and not a single other associate was expected to send a transcript after the first summer. Everyone knows grades are meaningless compared to work product.
