I worked at Diplomatic Language Services part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

DLS provides you a platform to meet the smartest students in Greater DC area. It also provides you great opportunities to share your culture and language from your original country with people in this country.

    Cons

Language instructors are paid modestly. You do have have classes to teach every day, sometimes for two to three months.

    Advice to Management

If you have already retired, and you need a job to keep you active mentally, socially, this is the right job for you.

I have been working at Diplomatic Language Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work environment and classroom resources are very conducive to teaching.
    Very polite and professional staff.
    HR is very attentive.
CEO treats instructors and clients well and without distinction.
Very good language teaching library. Excellent pantry.

    Cons

Nothing worth mentioning. Health insurance a bit expensive. Compared to other schools in the area, Diplomatic Language Services is superior in many ways.

    Pros

Flexible, casual work environment with a lot of cultural events. There are people literally from around the world so you get to learn interesting things. Very friendly coworkers. Can get a lot of good experience and can move around to interesting jobs.

    Cons

The benefits are mediocre to poor. Health insurance is super expensive and they don't contribute to 401k. Salaries are also low.

    Advice to Management

Invest in quality people. Stay more focused and professional.

    Pros

Good people overall, multicultural environment, social environment so employees are familiar with departments other than their own.

    Cons

Lack of communication between teams and very little room for upward movement. Management could be more efficient and present. Long hours on the regular but bearable with a good team.

    Advice to Management

Manage communication between teams better, be aware of your team's workload. Make your role needed.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Diplomatic Language Services full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work life balance is good. Other than that, can't say much. Executive staff is hardly in the office, so very hands off.

    Cons

The company cannot decide on a strategy. It is family owned, and the owner indulges his son's wasteful spending of company resources on unprofitable CRM infrastructure that is inappropriate for the type of business they are in. This has led to loss of senior leadership, as they cannot afford good help. The model seems to be to hire young people, pay them below industry average, offer below industry average benefits, burn them out, then hire again.

    Advice to Management

Re-allocate resources to hire senior level people that can help you grow the company, thus offering real growth potential to employees. Right now only two employees can see any growth in their careers there.
