I have been working at Disc Makers (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Company culture is fairly tight knit, lots of cross talk with middle management. Office environment is casual. Benefits and time off are half decent after working here for a few years

    Cons

The industry is floundering as a whole, causing a shift in focus from high quality work to low priced mid-quality work. The company is generally understaffed, and pay is below market. Very little upward mobility.

    Advice to Management

Aggressive expansion into other areas has spread the company thin. Decide what you want to be, then focus on that niche market.

I worked at Disc Makers full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Casual work environment. All the soapy coffee you can drink.

    Cons

Low pay, puzzling politics, small fish feeling large in a tiny little sea. HR and upper management sort of try to make it look like they care about you, but they don't. Bathrooms are nauseating.

    Advice to Management

I am so happy not to be working for you guys anymore. My job at DM served it's purpose in my life, but I stayed longer than I should have. A job was all it was, and HR was sure to let me know how little they knew me and thought of my potential. I'm sure it seems like I got fired, but not at all, I did great work. Found a better opportunity and quit.

I worked at Disc Makers full-time (More than a year)

25c Sodas/free bagels, very friendly and energetic staff, good management, great products

    Cons

    Compensation was not competitive enough

"Dead end job, just a bunch of rich a-holes trying to get richer with no opportunities to get promoted. Depressing job."

    Pros

    They gave you time off.
They let me work 4 10 hour shifts.
    HR was good.
    Flexible about time off sometimes.

    Cons

Management was very aloof and disconnected from employees.
Only care about the shareholders making money.
No feedback from management about where the companies going.
    No opportunity for upward mobility.
You just want to work just hard enough to not get fired.

    Advice to Management

Be a lot cooler to your employees and make it a fun place to work. Pay employees a lot more and fire the ones who don't cut it. Make it a place people WANT to work. Make it a place where the current employees WANT to work harder for you.

I worked at Disc Makers full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits were good; health insurance, vision, dental, 401(k), free bagels in the morning, free coffee & cocoa all day/night, 25-cent sodas. Doing work for some of your favorite musicians is always a plus.

    Cons

Optical media is in its twilight, cutbacks and layoffs are commonplace. Employee morale is nothing like it used to be.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the value of the employees. Bring back Team Building events. Understand that low morale is no good for any company. The CEO could stand to walk around the facility, getting his hands dirty and get feedback personally from the employees, as the Owner used to do.

    Pros

Great people, very supportive team, free bagels and coffee. People want to hear your ideas and help you accomplish your goals.

    Cons

Sometimes I felt like I didn't have enough to do

    Advice to Management

Keep encouraging your interns to think big and be innovative!

I worked at Disc Makers full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with and easy to be around in social settings. Music, Art, Movies and pop-culture is part of the company business as well as employee background. Fun, casual environment and an office party each year that has employees playing in bands at a club in town. Talented workforce, accessible management, great HR department, and free coffee and bagels.

    Cons

Optical discs are becoming obsolete and the industry is shrinking as a whole. DM does a good job keeping afloat, however not as much growth potential as there was in the past.

    Advice to Management

Keep reaching out for other industries that have the same niche market possibilities and apply the DM business model. It's working for other AVL products so far.
