    Pros

Great people, great environment. Company really tries to take care of their people

    Cons

Calls can get monotonous. Not a living wage to support a family

    Pros

Not a stressful job, Reasonable Leaders,

    Cons

Arbitrary Audit Reviews of calls, that is Call Reviews can give you a bad score on a call because they are having a bad day, and there is little you can do to change your score,

I worked at Discover full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are a lot of good people who work at Discover, and it is a small enough environment that problems get solved faster moreso than larger corporations

    Cons

Management seems like they're always out to get someone. In some ways, they serve as the definition of "Police State". Workload is immense and you are always overtaxed with a workload of 3 people or more.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees as your mother would want you to. You operate at a level that causes the little people to suffer in silence.

I have been working at Discover full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great Vacation (5 weeks!)
    Great 401K match
Freedom to work on projects you want
    Not too fast paced

    Cons

Little ability for promotion (everyone is a Director or Sr. Manager)
    Health Care needs improvement
    Stingy with equity.
    Pay is conservative (low)

    Advice to Management

Create additional positions between manager and VP. Pay more. Grant more equity.

I have been working at Discover full-time

    Pros

    Interesting initiatives to work on.

    Cons

No parking - With so many consultants hired, people are having to park illegally at the Riverwoods location and people are getting tickets. Not sure how they can ticket you when you don't have a place to park. They state they are planning on adding more parking but they are running out of space to put parking.

The Riverwoods location is tightly packed so your "cube" is probably smaller than at other companies.

They are moving to an open seating model (ie you can sit anywhere you like) so if you like having your own cube as your own "personal space", don't count on it in the future as the whole building will be like this in about a year.

They are starting to model everyone's work after the agile methodology (daily huddles, standard work) so if you don't like agile, you won't like working here.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating employees like a commodity and more like unique resources. No everyone can function in an agile environment, especially most of the older resources.

I have been working at Discover (More than 5 years)

    Pros

PTO and benefits are great for the industry even though it's hard to take time off. The incentives can be good in collections.

    Cons

Lack of communication and consistent change without any goal in mind. The collections department has changed so many times that there is no one ever knows what's going on.

    Advice to Management

Stop Posturing for position and make it work

I worked at Discover full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Your fellow employees are great. Benefits aren't bad. I learned that I never want to work for a company that gives out candy to recognize high performance. Easy job.

    Cons

Upper management views you as a number. Vengeful atmosphere. Management says they want honest feedback but will punish you for what they perceive as a negative comment. In the call centers it feels like a high school atmosphere with you director as principal. Upper management is not good at admitting mistakes.

    Advice to Management

Stop giving candy out as a reward for high performance. Listen to the employees. If your going to promote a culture stick to it. You promoted the 7 habits of highly effective people and even had classes on it but your culture does not reflect this at all. Get rid of vengeful managers. It is clear that some managers and quality analyst unfairly target people and where reviews of work are supposed to be random samples we have seen people targeted. The big question here is where is the directive coming from to target these people?

I have been working at Discover full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good medical and dental benefits. Business technology area has flexible hours as long as there is no install being done. Good time off.

    Cons

Business technology goes from nothing to do to 80+ hours a week. Poor planning. Cost benefit is not considered for projects. Offshore support is horrible. Matters what the customers say but not what employees say.

    Advice to Management

Check out what your managers are doing. They can make or break a team.

I have been working at Discover part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are great. Paid time off, okay pay

    Cons

Stressful, always changing, it's definitely a carrot or the stick company. They reward you one day and threaten to write you up the next.

    Advice to Management

Stop all the confusion with the changes, and expecting everyone to be on the same page.

I have been working at Discover full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Incredible customer focus. Daily feedback emails, weekly call listening sessions. Accessible c-suite leadership, open to constructive dissent. Lots of cross functional learning opportunities

    Cons

Overly involved senior leadership. Casual opinion based comment by a C*O can entirely derail an otherwise data driven and research based project or feature.
