      Pros

Very good benefits! All the people at Discover are considerate, nice and easy-going. Good work life balance. We have good health insurance and 25 days off per year.

      Cons

Sometimes it takes long time to get something approved for the upper management.

Great Company with benefits but upper management SUCKS!

      Pros

Discover is a stable company to work for with good benefits when it comes to 401K, insurances, and PTO. The pay is decent, but they tend to cut back on incentives on certain departments and pay less compared to their competitors.

      Cons

Upper management SUCKS! I’m talking about HQ people, we are all just a number to them and easily replaceable. Management on the floor (team leaders and coaches) tend to be nice and flexible with employees for the most part but they do not get the last word. Also, system issues are a regular thing and happen almost daily.

      Decent starter job

      Pros

Colleagues and the work environment are great, TL's and coaches are very supportive with what your goals are within the company. Training and trainers are supportive with your development. Everyone is and upbeat

      Cons

Very high call volumes with very little time between calls to catch a breath, and some calls can be mentally draining. Upper management is questionable and there is not much communication between management and agents. When you ask for more learning opportunities, there is rarely a time where management will provide you with what you ask for.

      Pros

Great benefits and lots of kind people.

      Cons

Toxic workplace. Constant pressure to over-perform. High level negativity if not in top performers. Upper management picks and chooses favorites.

Under paid and over worked- senior underwriter

      Sep 12, 2019 - Anonymous Employee

      Pros

PTO time, ability to work from home

      Cons

Production goals are unrealistic and far fetched. Created by upper management who only sees numbers and does not understand the role and the process time needed review a loan. The staff consists of JR underwriters, mid level underwriters and Senior underwriters. Mid level and Jr underwriters do not review complex loans such as self employed, fixed income or rental income. However, you are held to the same production goal. Thus, you WILL have to work OT in order to meet your production goals. At the end of the month, they will hold you accountable for small mistakes such as spelling errors or a mistype of an account number, which will impact your overall rating. (Which is used for reviews and end of year raises) Salary is very low in comparison to other companies.

      Great Customer Focus

      Pros

Overall Discover offers terrific benefits and has an outstanding drive to provide customer service to cardmembers and merchants.

      Cons

Lack of agreement within certain departments on how to prioritize business goals and how to execute them. Upper management is communicating that decisions need to be pushed to lower management levels, yet the reality is that the work environment is increasingly becoming more micromanaged.

      Beware of Spotty Leadership

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Benefits are excellent, and base salary, while not as high as some other finance companies, is fair. Bonus structure and raises are also fairly decent. You have the opportunity to learn a lot at Discover from some very smart people. I'd highly recommend it as a place to get solid corporate work experience before moving on elsewhere.

      Cons

      1. Recent rounds of layoffs as part of department restructures exposed leaders that aren't making decisions based on actual job function or performance, but personal relationships or agendas. This isn't the way to keep morale high. A lot of people feel the place has become toxic due to the reorgs happening across the enterprise and are looking to get out. 2. There is a huge bloat of middle and upper management. Too many Directors, specifically, who are largely incompetent or not at all useful, and instead just trying to figure out who and how to get promoted to VP. It's an additional layer between Senior Manager and VP that is largely useless if all the Directors care about is getting ahead, and not the actual functions of each team. 3. Goals are very ill-defined here. You spend months and months forming goals and projections only to abandon them for the next shiny object that pops up. There's surprisingly little strategic thinking among the higher ups here. It's all about reacting to the latest fire or hot topic and not at all about executing a cohesive strategy. 4. Work from home benefits are about to go away due to the new CEO hating it, so if you're counting on that and hate commuting to the suburbs, I'd recommend finding a different place to work. 5. DMS is really ineffective. It creates more meetings and wastes time trying to brainstorm on initiatives that ultimately never get executed.

      Pros

      Cons

Upper management lies to groups of employees providing wrong information. Constant change no consistency. Seems to not care about employees life outside of work does not like to accommodate to school hours

Good benefits and steady work, but beware office politics

Apr 2, 2016 - Senior Associate Programmer in Riverwoods, IL

      Pros

Very good benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401k match, ESPP, 25 PTO days/year from the start of employment), gym on site, large cafeteria on site and work-life balance (they allow work-from-home for most). Big company with internal mobility options. Mostly friendly people and good culture. Overall good place to work and I was mostly happy with my time there.

      Cons

Salary is very average. Couples with kids get more value in the benefits and work-life balance. Not as much compensation value if you're young, single, and/or childless. Also, the cost of housing around Riverwoods is high, so a lot of employees end up with a fairly long commutes or renting with roommates. Very steady and conservative company, so things can get boring quickly. If you want to move and advance, you'll need to push for it on your own, managers are more interested in keeping things as they are and I have seen multiple instances of employee internal moves get sabotaged. Lots of red-tape and bureaucracy, but it comes with the territory of working for a bank. Office politics is very prevalent. Upper management is very disconnected from day-to-day work and re-orgs are common so management is constantly changing. Decisions are often made based on who is screaming the loudest. From a technology perspective, not much is very new or cutting edge and it's almost impossible to bring in new things or change standards.
