I worked at Discovery Communications full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Supportive corporate culture. Exciting content to sell. Competitive compensation plans. Impressive global reach of programming. Top tier media company.

    Cons

At times, unrealistic budgets and goals. A lot of red tape to get anything done. Sometimes, too much content to sell across a limited ad community.

    Advice to Management

Step outside the "Discovery Bubble". Listen more to the line AE on the state of the markets. Limit the number of restructuring of sales teams. Let AE become champions of their properties rather than clean house every couple of years.

    Pros

This is a very special company to work for. They are very flexible and outstanding when it comes to anything family related. They create an environment that feels like family away from home. The benefits are amazing very conducive to family life balance. Very easy going environment but not to be confused with laziness, people do work very hard here. The company is very supportive of each other.

    Cons

They reward time spent on a job over hard work.

    Advice to Management

Try advancing the hard workers over the veterans

I worked at Discovery Communications full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay and introduction/connection to a lot of great production companies

    Cons

Corporate atmosphere not creative. Management can be a bit dry depending on the team. Not a ton of diversity.

    Advice to Management

Think outside the box and do what makes Discovery special. Stop "staying in the lane" of reality TV.

I worked at Discovery Communications full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked in the new york office and it lacked diversity. I also noticed they don't work as a 'team' meaning if someone was lacking help they didn't bother to help them succeed unless you were very close to them outside of work. Not much attention from senior management as well. Pay was okay for starting out but I really got by with doing overtime working till 7/8pm most days. Could be better for people trying to live in NY.

    Cons

Great benefits, paid vaca & sick days, great to start your career out of college but could never see myself there for years.

    Pros

Giant corporation with many different parts of the company. Own many television channels. Shark week is cool.

    Cons

Worst management ever. I was an advertising sales assistant. They hire some weird people who act like its still college and try and frat and get blackout all the time. The sales department was ruthless and nobody was inspiring. As a young girl joining the work force I felt like everyone was SO stand off ish. They offered training but it wasn't helpful. They use computer programs from the 90's. They do not pay enough for the work they expect from the assistants. There was CONSTANT turnover. Honestly this place sucks I would stay far far away.

    Advice to Management

Hire better more inspiring people that make people want to work. Not crotechy ladies with chips on their shoulders.

Clean house and start promoting because of skills. Train managers.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Smart, aggressive, passionate, but personable executives.

    Cons

Long tenured employees come with extreme "old bureaucratic attitudes". Things are done a certain way because that is the way they have always been done. CEO's compensation the highest multiple of any public company and it shows.

    Advice to Management

The business is changing and the old model won't hold up. Cash out now!
